So, I think there is a solid middle ground between we are doing great in the portal vs doom & gloom. It looks like we have constructed a plausible competitive roster between the retained talent and what has been brought in (mostly from Iowa St). We were already losing a bunch of talent/starting minutes to graduation so to some extent 2026 was going to be a rebuild even under the best circumstances (i.e. even if the 2025 team was actually good)

What we've lost to the portal has tended to be more depth and potential than sure fire starting stars. I would have liked to have seen some more players return rather than leave - and I suppose there are some pending still out there that may opt to return - just for the purposes of depth if nothing else and having more to choose from in an open competition in the spring/summer. Especially when I see guys leaving to go to non-P4 programs, I wonder if they were asked to leave or if the playing time was the main factor because they probably aren't cashing in a big payday. Yes, the flipside is if they are leaving for a non-P4 program, are they all that good.

I'm dismayed that we haven't pulled in a few bigger names from the portal with the alleged amount of money we have to offer. Some of the ISU guys are definitely in that range and great additions. But I thought we'd get at least a few of the top names in the portal from other P4 programs by dangling some cash. Not following close enough to see who is out there but hopefully we'll still draw some this week.

My other concern is a lack of bodies. Between the small recruiting class and the exodus to graduation and the portal, the roster still needs to be filled. I hope that we can still get some depth players this week too (not necessarily high end guys) because aren't we only around 80-85 players right now? We don't necessarily need 105 but you need 95-100 at least so that seems like a good bit to go.
PSU is currently at 102, This includes class of 2026, portal players, returning players and walkons. I do not think that they will be constrained by the 105 limit.

Having said that, from all accounts, Campbell is not one to countenance divas or players who look at team mates as the great unwashed because they are collecting a particular paycheck. Any whiff of that and they are gone.

Fit will come first. Then he will assess the money

Well for all we know this kid will run through walls just to put on the blue and white. DII guys are like that, getting the shot they didn't get a few years back ---he's older more mature than a Highschooler so under that assumption alone I would take some guys like that on my team in a heartbeat

I mean BGJ had some success from the Lackawanna group [and they were JUCO].. guess the OP forgot we did that or maybe didnt even know we did that .. 2 are starters in the pros... who woulda thunk from a lowly JUCO program??

so I wouldn't put it past MC and company to already have a list of D2 targets they are watching
Absolutely. Do you think Kiffin was stupid to bring on Trinidad Chambliss from Ferris State, a DII school? Its called talent evaluation and confidence in your ability to develop players.

I don’t think any knowledgeable fans have ever doubted the talent of AJ Harris. To me, the concern had more to do with other factors. For example, Terry Smith benched AJ Harris in at least 2 games this past season. In the Northwestern game AJ Harris was clearly more talented to overcome anything Northwestern had on offense. Yet, he looked really bad in that game. Lack of motivation? NIL money related?

If a player is benched by Terry Smith, it tells me the problem is with the player.
Harris will be good at IU. He used to be good here but he lost motivation just like Franklin and most of the team. Terry was able to get them back on track but that didn't include AJ who was rightfully benched. How he performs at IU has nothing to do with the current staff.

Remember those guys also need to want to stay. MC could want them all he can, but if they see greener pastures, there’s not much he can do. Grunk saw he wasn’t going to start here. Reynolds would have been at best TE 3 as a junior. Reports are that Coleman checked out after the OSU game and it is not surprising that he followed Knowles to the Vols. Remember Knowles praised him early, named him the Chasmainian Devil and gave him early playing time. On top of that, BGJ apparently overpaid bench players to keep them loyal and most were looking at a pay cut to stay. Not easy to give back money you thought you were worth.
Well of course they need to want to stay. My comment related to their talent level.

Never mind, found out Fatterson is a fake name. I was afraid it was real and the authorities would force me to change my name to it.

PSU needs help at DE, and there was some thought they might make a move with this kid, but it appears not

DE is probably the greatest need, but also could use some depth along the OL (particularly OT) and LB. Also, would be great to get a blue chip addition at DT or WR but doesn't seem like there is anyone is in play for us for that.

People discussing rumors on the internet happens 100s of times daily. It doesn’t make them true. Once he was fired Franklin had no idea what would happen to the committed players and could only honestly say that he didn’t know. That is when Kraft could have stepped in and settled the issue. Or he could have instantly hired the coach he had lined up before the firing had he planned ahead. This is all on Kraft. Maybe things will turn out well but if it doesn’t it isn’t Franklin’s fault.
You should not be surprised that Franklin had great support from players and coaches because he was loyal to them. Posters have complained about it for years.
All I have to say in regards to Franklin is not many of the Good PSU players followed him to VT, whereas almost every high end ISU player followed MC to PSU. Franklin landed a lot of potential candidates and backups. He got Grunk and Reynolds...that is about it for starters. You had several PSU starters for next year who are even from VA that stayed. I think MC is doing phenomenal so far, sure I would like a few more blue chip guys coming on board, but MC has only been on the job for a little over a month and had A LOT to do.
