We were going to have to bring in a transfer QB no matter what. we couldn’t go into next season with true freshman peyton falzone as our primary backup. Campbell wanted to keep Grunk, that’s a proven fact. Grunk was told that we were going to bring in a transfer QB (probably Becht) and that he was going to have to compete with him for the starting job. Grunk didn’t want to potentially lose the starting battle when he could go somewhere else, get paid, and start.

You have to stop--if Becht comes there's no competition. Grunk sits barring injury. It's a simple concept.
Again--there's zero competition.
Almost no programs have an open competition for QB in this era.

Not necessarily true. Pribula portaled to Missou and didn’t win the starting spot. He started because their other guy got hurt.
That’s the thing. The idea that people are “guaranteed” a starting role is generally not true. I mean there’s nothing coach might say that to get them in but there’s way more QBs available than starting spots. You’d have to be a proven stud who has already started to be named a starter going in and I don’t think Grunk is quite at that level.

You don't think Grunk will be guaranteed to start somewhere like Michigan State or Virginia?
But if his priority is to play he can go somewhere like UNLV and defeinitely start. No one is risking sitting on the bench in year 3 with the film he has.

There would’ve been a competition but ok, i’m not the type to get in a message board argument. We likely get Becht and Manske this year. Becht is the win now option, he knows the system and the coaches better than anyone. Yes it would’ve been nice to keep Grunk, but he didn’t want to stay and compete.

No, there would not have been a competition.
Becht was coming here and was starting no matter what?
A simple question--you believe, Becht would come here and "battle" for a job? Is that what you're telling me?
Grunk isn't stupid--he wisely left. This isn't the 80s when coaches control the player. Becht was always going to be our starter in 2026--from the moment we hired Campbell.

Just because Grunk is in the portal doesn’t mean he is definitely leaving. Trying to leverage more NIL money or a guaranteed starting position. There are a lot of QB’s that have announced for the portal so there is a lot of competition.

He's 100% gone
Technically you're right but he's gone

This program is an effing joke. Michigan has 4 in the portal and kept their class mostly intact. I’m so sick of being a PSU fan.

It was all the way back in 2003-4 when Maurice Clarett sued to get the rule changed. He lost. In today's climate I could see someone try it again but I have my doubts that they would succeed.
I believe Clarett lost due to the rule being in the NFLPA CBA as a way to help protect veterans spots being taken by younger players

I have my thoughts/beliefs and you have yours. Not everything has to be a negative argument. your question doesn’t deserve an answer, because i’ve already stated my answer in previous posts. Lighten up dude. We agree to disagree, conversation over.

I always love "conversation over"--it's not about opinions. You were falsely stating your view as a fact so you could attack Grunk. But at least you won't respond to this with more nonsense.

"but he didn't want to stay and compete" is absurd--grow up and stop attacking kids for not being used.

There was no way he would have beaten out Becht for the job, if Becht comes, and if Menske comes over, he may not even have won the back up job. Both those guys have been in Campbell's system for years. Grunk will be playing catch up, Grunk did a good job as the default option last year after Allar went down. We will see where he lands and how well he does. As for guarantees, he will learn that if other roster players play better that guarantee goes out the window. No contract will safeguard his job if he goes to a new system and plays like a**. He will get payed either way.

Had Pribula stayed, Grunk would have been a 3rd stringer in his second year. He got an opportunity and played well with no experience. Who’s to say we don’t have someone else on the roster who could do the same thing? If Allar would have finished out the year no one would have cared if Grunk left, but now it’s somehow the end of the program.

If Beau stayed do you really think Grunk would have?
I agree--it's not the end of the program but it is a loss. Hopefully Becht plays well

It may or may not be a loss….if Becht comes in and plays well and we have a younger guy that ends up being good, then it’s not a loss….especially if Grunk goes somewhere else and ends up being average. I heard what a loss Beau was and he wasn’t. No matter what, you eventually lose your QB, so hopefully you bring in someone as good or better.

I could have told you Beau wasn't a loss lol
Grunk is ready to be a starter--whether he ends up being average, great or awful I believe he earned that. I'm 100% fine with Campbell going with his guy but I also think the criticism of Grunk is absurd. There's no logic in anyone saying he should have stayed with Becht likely coming.

I just find it humorous that so many on here blast Franklin endlessly about his inability to recruit and develop QB’s and now it’s a disaster that we lose one of his QB’s. I have no issue with Grunk leaving unless Becht doesn’t come to PSU, then I’d have to wonder why he would leave.

If Franklin was here I wouldn't want Grunk to stay--he's a pocket passer and Franklin destroys them. Thankfully Grunk escaped that torture--assuming he's not stupid enough to go to Va Tech

Agreed. I would rather have Grunk over Becht. Upside and more years over trying to squeeze out results in 2026.
I trust the coaching staff. it sucks to see Grunk leave and would’ve been nice to keep him, but I respect his decision. I’m eager to see what Campbell and company do for QB next year.
