I haven’t seen anyone predict “a quick climb to greatness.” I did see many posters predict doom and gloom for PSU during the lengthy coaching search process that included the decimation of the recruiting class. We‘re clearly in the wait and see mode, but I’ll predict 8-4 at worst next year, no disaster scenario, and am hopeful of a rebuild of team culture and future recruiting and portal success after this clearly aberrational year.

And I don’t see anyone “condemning” Grunk for transferring to VT — many just believe he’s being shortsighted in returning to play under coaches and a system that seem ill suited to his skill set.

Most of the posters expected a national championship last year. This wasn't a team without talent. This was a team without a good coach.

So now you’re shifting gears to last season and the fantasy that BGJ oversold? First, that’s in the past and has nothing to do with “a quick climb to greatness” expectation for CMC and next year’s team. Which nobody expects (so a straw man), especially in light of the timing of firing v. hiring, which caused a mass exodus of both roster players and 2026 recruits. As a result, the huge ISU influx is a necessary restoration of a roster, to be supplemented by portals in from other schools. That’s the next step, already underway.

I hope our fans are intelligent enough to realize success at VT in ACC would not necessarily equate to him having sustained success in B1G.

Wait, I am giving too much credit to some on here.

Reality is we will never know for sure.

Oh, you mean like Miami not having that much success in the ACC this year (lost twice to middle of the pack ACC teams and didn't even qualify for ACC CCG), but eliminated duhO$U in duhO$U's first Playoff game who was undefeated in the b1g Reg Season, had a 1R bye and entered Playoff as the #2 Seed????

Campbell is picking them all from one mediocre ISU team while cignetti recruited them from a dozen different teams.
To begin with, JMU was 11-2 in Cignetti's last year. Generally, an 11-2 JMU has talent that is comparable to, if not worse than, an 8-4 Iowa State team. Cignetti took 13 players from 11-2 JMU after he left.

Further, I am in the camp of believing that luck and timing had a lot to do with Cignetti catching lightening in a bottle with this Indiana team. There is no way to know if the players from a dozen different teams will come together as a cohesive team as it only takes a few problematic players to destroy a team. I am not taking anything away from Cignetti's coaching ability as he is beating top tier teams more consistently than Franklin could ever do in his best years, I just think that it is unrealistic to expect a coach with a limited budge to create championship level teams by cherry picking players from "a dozen different teams" without being extremely lucky. It is obviously safer to go with the players you know and Cignetti did exactly the same thing.

Campbell is cherry picking players from the team that he coached. He knows what they are capable of under his system. There is a greater chance at success grabbing players that he is intimately familiar with than grabbing players from other ACC teams / BIG 12 teams with similar success or grabbing players from lower rated conferences with greater statistical success. Obviously, grabbing studs from the BIG or SEC is optimal but you are generally going to have to over pay for these players. Given the across the board needs for PSU, PSU is simply not in a position to overpay for a single stud at this point. Overpaying for a proven stud receiver or a stud linebacker would have been justified last year given the returning talent and high expectations, but not this year.

Hey cherry picking is a work of art --

Cignetti pulled 13 from JMU when he came to IU so there is that.

Wow. Looking at the PSU incoming transfer portal it looks like this new staff is really "surgical" about how they're spending their NIL money. 99% Iowa State players and pushing away some good existing talent at PSU by doing so. Lot of thought put into this one......
