Don't we rank like top 10 in terms of campus land area? I know parking was a hassle when I was a student a few years ago, I'm sure it' gotten worse. But a parking garage at State's campus would be little more than a monument to the laziness of students.

it's not for students. its for faculty/staff, union parking for events, and police station. it will relieve the parking lots behind the ymca, psych bldg, harned, etc, so they can finally do away with lee blvd between union and ymca.

They recently built one at UAH and my parking decal went from about $30/year to $120 a year. A quick little calculation shows that if you divide the 25 million by a guess of 12 thousand car decals sold/year and paid off over 30 years with no interest, you're looking at $70/car/year. Ouch.

Even if you factor in sporting events and sell out the garage for $25/space every time, it will take 800 events to pay for it. Problem is that it will only fetch premium price for football since it is far from the Hump.

Stanford, like MSU, has a very large campus and lots of space. It's a place where you wouldn't expect a parking garage but there was one. Parking in that garage cost $200 in 1990. Using that as a baseline and taking into inflation, I can see having a garage there if MSU charged $350-$400 for parking there.

And so far only one day of class has occurred and parking tickets are all over the place. They started initiating the fund raising when they discussed this last year. Also there were talks of potentially having parking service do 24/7 monitoring of parking zones. So instead of letting the students park anywhere after 5 p.m. until the following morning they will have to park in their restricted zone 24/7 or subject themselves to parking fines.

does a great job. All the money they take in gets pumped right back into parking lots, unlike years past. The dude isn't very popular but he's got the parking thing down. State probably has the best parking situation in the SEC and it's probably the cheapest.

I just hope I can get out of MSU before I can't afford campus parking anymore. I park in my respected zone and am never hassled, but I can't afford to keep purchasing decals that are increasing this much. I don't mind walking but the problem with that is I don't live on campus.

Looks like things are still going in the right direction on campus. Crazy what actually having a master plan will do.

I hope they do a good job on the parking garage, but that is a good place for one because it sinks down into that little valley and you can build it up without it being very noticeable (if noticeable at all) from the heart of campus. I think they did a good job with the parking garage at the Butler Snow building here in Ridgeland. Something like that would be nice.

and they have one. As noted below, it all goes to being more pedestrian friendly.

University of Cincinnati it's $150 per quarter for the cheapest, most ancient BFE parking deck they have. It's $225 if you want to park closer (as in right under) the academic buildings. Again, this is per quarter, so you have to renew every three months.

Just because you are blessed with abundant space, doesn't mean it's asking to be filled with parking lots. You build for density and preserve open space for.. you know.. open space. Just ask - I don't know - the Unites States of strip malls. Believe me, I'm shocked the university is acting on sound planning principles as well.

Surface parking on the outskirts of (a quite large) campus: $240/yr
Surface parking somewhat more centrally located: $360/yr
Deck parking: $480/yr

I wish I was still paying the State prices.

Which will really improve that area of campus...... Also, this is not just a parking garage, plans call for office space and classrooms to be apart of it, which will make the outside of the garage look like the YMCA and Union

Out of my element here...would there be any federal funds available for a parking garage project at a State University? The only reason I ask is the phrase "pedestrian and bike friendly" was used.

A poster on BDJ says there are plans for a restaurant and maybe a book store, but I'm not sure if thats accurate.

I think it's a great idea really, especially if there is a pay by the hour part for visitors. Plus, enrollment went from about 16K to 19.5K in the last five years. In the next 5 years it could be at 25K, they'll need more parking to accomindate.

And yes I'm sure decals will go up, but they'll still be the cheapest in the SEC. They should raise them to $200 a student and go up from there.

From someone who would know
Bell Island is going to stay as is for a good while...

I'd love to see them finish the Old Main stuff like the arches..but the Bell Island looked to be more of a concept.

There have been times when this guys employees have made me want to punch a baby. I know I have been in the wrong on most tickets I get, but there were some that have been very very questionable. I think students spend WAY too much money on parking tickets.

For the scope of work involved it sounds like a reasonable price. In fact better price than would have been available a few years ago during the boom. The actual architecture involved in a project like this is somewhat minimal. Mainly they are a giant concrete box made of pre-fab pieces with cast vertical stair shafts and central spines. Most of this work will be design-build by the precast company.
If they are wanting to clad it so as to appear similar to the YMCA then that will be the majority of work that Belinda Stewart's firm will be doing. And they are good at that.

1250 spaces is a pretty big parking garage. Assuming it can be 5 stories we're talking about something close to 130'-0''ish wide and 550'-0''ish long.

and the typical garages (at least around here) run about $12-15,000 per space. The one proposed looks to be estimated at $20,000 per space. It's a little high, but depending on the architectural features, whatever timeline they are projecting, and given that it's a quasi-public project, I could easily see one running up to $20k per.

Also, I love the idea. If the public can park there and jump on shuttles to the Junction every Saturday instead of the Fustercluck public parking situation we have now, I'm all for it.

12-15k is pretty typical here in Atlanta as well for exposed pre-cast concrete construction. if it's clad in brick or cast stone whatever, there is a lot of surface area plus any occupied spaces. I'm actually glad to hear they are not going bottom of the barrel on the Garage, they can be an eyesore if done on the cheap. When well designed they can blend in better and be a great asset. Parking on the peripheries of campus makes for long walks.

I'm going to guess that that parking garage is more than 20k per space. It appears to be enclosed with standing seam metal roof, fully clad, and some sort of conditioned lobby space at each floor.

I'd say that what is proposed for State is probably more like this than your typical exposed concrete garage, but that is a total 'pulling it out of my ***' guess.

Could always be something like this.

Nope, not with Foil Wyatt.

That's a parking garage in South Beach Miami by Swiss Architects Herzog and DeMueron, I think it cost something like 100million dollars or some other totally ridiculous figure. Totally would not fit on State's campus....
