I’m kind of surprised that Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t get nominated for Marty Supreme. She was awesome in that.

Sinners really racked up the nominations. I thought it was just ok and didn't live up to the hype. But I thought Delroy Lindo, like everything else he's in was excellent. So I hope he wins.
Frankenstien was ehhh.

Didn't really know what to make of Bugonia until the end. May be one of the coolest endings I've seen.

I thought One Battle After Another was excellent and agree with the Frankenstein comment above.

Marty Supreme: it has the most punchable leading character of any movie I can remember. You really don’t give a **** about him. But the movie is very well made and the director Josh Safdie lets the actors act and that’s the best part of the movie. A good watch but in the end nothing all that special. OBAA is much better.

Thanks Tom! I thought this wasn't released until February. Anyway, some early thoughts...

  • Think the surest thing is Jesse Buckley for Hamnet. I love that Emma Stone was nominated though and I loved Bugonia, but Buckley has been excellent for years and it's her time I think. Second surest thing is 'Golden' winning Original Song.
  • Love that F1 got a Best Picture nod - ensures Pitt will be on the red carpet and he's always fun.
  • Think Sinners may be the surprise here, but tons of nominations doesn't always translate to wins. I do think they will want to reward it somehow though so wouldn't be surprised to see it win a big category (maybe Best Actor for Jordan who does double duty, or Best Director?). At worst will win Best Original Screenplay.
  • Honestly, no idea how Penn, Del Toro, and Taylor got noms for OBAA. Penn is the most justifiable I guess, but the other two had very very little screen time. Taylor seems to be a favorite but I don't see her winning here. Lilleaas my pick there. Think PTA gets either Best Director or Picture but not both....
  • I'm stunned Eddington was so disregarded come awards season; Phoenix gave the best male performance I've seen this year and I thought the script and cast (including Emma Stone and Pedro Pascal) were top notch. Was way more riveting than OBAA IMO.
Always love the Oscars and looking forward to everything leading up to them.

Have we (as in the people in the US) seen the best pic nominees? I'm not sure most people have seen half.

Indicating based on box office receipts. Seems like an odd field this year with Sinners set to win going away. I suppose One Battle, Marty Supreme and F1 could win but seems unlikely. No one has seen the other movies.

  • "Bugonia" - no, $17M
  • "F1" - yes, $190M
  • "Frankenstein" - maybe, $22M
  • "Hamnet" - no, $15M
  • "Marty Supreme"- yes, $80M
  • "One Battle After Another" - yes, $70M
  • "The Secret Agent" - no, $2.5M
  • "Sentimental Value" - no, $3.6M
  • "Sinners" - yes, $279M
  • "Train Dreams" - no, straight to streaming

Was going to say the same thing; Bugonia (Paramount), F1 (Apple), Frankenstein (Netflix), OBAA (HBO MAX), Train Dreams (Netflix). The Secret Agent is a foreign film and the others have had limited releases for the most part.

Train Dreams is actually pretty good. It would be much better in a theater, more so than your run of the mill movie. Pretty mountain scenery. A story your wife will love. It's a good movie.
