My maternal grandfather passed away that morning.

Around 11 a.m. that morning, I had gotten out of the shower and was getting dressed, as some fellow Duke students and I (my sophomore year) were going to Chapel Hill to eat lunch at one of our favorite places, The Rathskeller (colloquially referred to as "The Rat"). We were going to go eat, and come back and start pre-gaming. I was running behind and I just happened to notice the message light blinking on the answering machine.

My father had left a message about my grandfather. So obviously my plans changed.

I drove to meet my father, then we drove to my grandparents' house. The game was about to start but my grandmother didn't want the TV on, which I understood. Made it to an uncle's house right at the end of the first half.

Watched all the second half and overtime.

When Woods hit that shot, we were all quiet. I put my head down, just shaking it back and forth.

Now obviously I'm not omniscient, and you don't have to believe me, but something made me perk up, and I said, "We're not losing that way. Not today."

Of course the outcome had nothing to do with that but that will always be a very memorable day for me, as I went through the gamut of emotions, from seeing the pain in my mother's face over losing her father, to the deliriousness of seeing Laettner hit that shot.

What a day.

One of the few times I remember exactly where I was. On the right side of my bed pacing and putting lucky socks on my hands to bring some good mojo. The phone rang shortly before Duke inbounded the ball and it was a UK fan who worked with my mom calling to rub it in that they won. About the time I said hello, Christian sank the shot and I yelled 'Yes', dropped the phone and ran up and down the hallway celebrating. I eventually got back to the phone and she said she couldn't believe it and I told her they lost because she was being mean to me. Ha!

I was at one of my wives parents house. Along with her, the parents, her brothers, and some neighbors. I’m the only Duke fan there. When Woods hit that running jump hook prayer, they were jumping around like monkeys......pointing at me and speaking in kY........oooooooh ooooooo oooooh

And then......

You could have heard a pin drop!!!

I'll never forget that game and play (well, until Alzheimer's strikes). I was so pissed when Woods threw that prayer up over Laettner and it went in, but I looked at the clock and saw there was 2.1 seconds left. Now I'm in my bedroom (wife and kids have left looooong ago at this point), and I start screaming as loud as I can 'just get the fu@&ing ball to Laettner over and over again. When Grant threw that ball (perfectly I might add) and Christian caught it, dribbled and turned to shoot it...as soon as the ball left his hands I jumped up and shouted FU@&ing GAME! I never doubted for one single moment that when Laettner got that good a look that there was any way the King of Clutch was going to miss. Unless you saw most of the games Laettner played in, you can't realize how incredible he was. He was a total badass.

The game with "the shot" seems like 50 years ago. As a matter fact, most things in my life seem like they were 50 years ago.

Actually,i think it was the stomp that started it all

The stomp definately cemented it but let's face the facts. The real hate was when Coach K started beating dean on an equal basis. unc nation just couldn't take the fact that there was a new kid in town that didn't give a ram's crap who dean was. Of course the hate as nationaly goes started with Laettner but rival wise it was when Coach K let dean know that it wasn't unc's conference anymore. OFC

What a great day! That was the official birth of the Duke Dynasty!

I was an 18 year old young buck loaded with Testosterone and every time I would walk into a convenience store the clerk thought I was packing a gun, If you smell what I'm cooking....

Never forget that. I ended up with, and boy will this sound weird, really bad rug burns on my knees after the shot. Now let me quickly explain. I started running around the room like a mad man and in a moment of extreme jubilation I thought I could slide across a floor covered with shag carpet. Well, that ended badly.

My wife and I were on 9th St in Durham at a bar long gone — Fat Man’s Squeeze.

My wife and I were looking at the screen. I kept saying “Plenty of time, plenty of time”, she kept saying “Shut UP!!”

Then the shot.

Then the place erupted and the bar bought everyone a round.

Fun times.

WHAT a GOOBER! I had to edit -- I put down 6th St....that's Austin....9th St.....that's Durham. WOW getting old sucks sometimes.
