of the shot.. #istillllovelaettner
I was at one of my wives parents house. Along with her, the parents, her brothers, and some neighbors. I’m the only Duke fan there. When Woods hit that running jump hook prayer, they were jumping around like monkeys......pointing at me and speaking in kY........oooooooh ooooooo oooooh
And then......
You could have heard a pin drop!!!
.

Stories like that are why sports are so important and so awesome. Thanks for sharing! My maternal grandfather passed away that morning.
Around 11 a.m. that morning, I had gotten out of the shower and was getting dressed, as some fellow Duke students and I (my sophomore year) were going to Chapel Hill to eat lunch at one of our favorite places, The Rathskeller (colloquially referred to as "The Rat"). We were going to go eat, and come back and start pre-gaming. I was running behind and I just happened to notice the message light blinking on the answering machine.
My father had left a message about my grandfather. So obviously my plans changed.
I drove to meet my father, then we drove to my grandparents' house. The game was about to start but my grandmother didn't want the TV on, which I understood. Made it to an uncle's house right at the end of the first half.
Watched all the second half and overtime.
When Woods hit that shot, we were all quiet. I put my head down, just shaking it back and forth.
Now obviously I'm not omniscient, and you don't have to believe me, but something made me perk up, and I said, "We're not losing that way. Not today."
Of course the outcome had nothing to do with that but that will always be a very memorable day for me, as I went through the gamut of emotions, from seeing the pain in my mother's face over losing her father, to the deliriousness of seeing Laettner hit that shot.
What a day.

What a great day! That was the official birth of the Duke Dynasty!
I was an 18 year old young back loaded with Testosterone and every time I would walk into a convenience store the clerk thought I was packing a gun, If you smell what I'm cooking....
Dang honkey. That's no way for a lady to talk.![]()
You’re in a safe space.Never forget that. I ended up with, and boy will this sound weird, really bad rug burns on my knees after the shot. Now let me quickly explain. I started running around the room like a mad man and in a moment of extreme jubilation I thought I could slide across a floor covered with shag carpet. Well, that ended badly.
We said female....we NEVER said lady!!!
My wife and I were on 9th St in Durham at a bar long gone — Fat Man’s Squeeze.
My wife and I were looking at the screen. I kept saying “Plenty of time, plenty of time”, she kept saying “Shut UP!!”
Then the shot.
Then the place erupted and the bar bought everyone a round.
Fun times.
Thanks OAD! Was old feeling older there.I was Jack Benny's age at the time of The Shot.
