I agree that not every conference champion should be seeded first, but no conference champion should be seeded lower than any team in it’s own conference either. I know there’s a lot of ball left to play and all this discussion will likely end up being a moot point, but the way it looks right now, if Murphy and Cherokee were to both win out (big IF), Cherokee could be seeded ahead of Murphy even though Murphy won the head to head AND the conference championship. That’s not right in any system.
So in essence you are proposing that Cherokee be dropped in the seeding to be placed right behind Murphy? This could have quite a ripple effect as sometimes teams could be playing teams with higher RPIs and conversely some teams would also be playing teams with lower RPIs than they earned. It is a qlitch in the system but is it worth the collateral damage? Another consideration is that the state already is slow producing brackets, is it worth introducing addition constraints to slow down the process. Remember any changes made will be applied to all sports.

Yeah I was on a podcast and we discussed this issue. Of course it’s not right.

Last year, East Wilkes was co-champs and beat Alleghany head-to-head pretty bad and the Trojans were seeded higher than East Wilkes.

What is everyone's opinion on who looks like could match up in the finals this year?

Does Starmount have enough? Or is Corvian going to be too much come playoff time?

As for the East someone fill me in, will Tarboro have any competition during the playoffs.

I think in the East there are two other teams to keep an eye on. Warren County and Edenton.

That math needs head to head somehow in formula.

How would you incorporate that with the formula that is already there?

I'll tell you why I think it's hard to incorporate it... Just because a team lost one game but plays a lot tougher of a schedule, they should be seeded under them? Say Hibriten has a lot of injuries and loses a close one to East Burke but wins all other 9 games. Is it fair to seed them below EB? That may take Hibriten from a top 5 seed to a bottom 5 seed in the west. Does the head to head only count in conference or out of conference too? It's already hard enough for some teams to find games, now teams aren't going to want to play in their own classification due to possibly dropping in RPI based on head to head.

Now you also have to think about sports like basketball that play a lot more games and each conference team twice. How does their head to head fit into the formula?

Not sure and head to head is not the end all be all but 2 teams that are close in rpi head to head should come into play.

I’m saying Murphy is flat out better than Cherokee and it’s a joke that the braves were ever ranked ahead of Murphy to begin with.

Again, it is not a ranking. It is a mathematical formula . That is 2 total different things. Rankings in this case would be one of the weakest systems you can use. Very few pollesters would of seen everyone and most teams have limited press coverage. This means much of the the rankings would be based on last year's results or a programs reputation. There does not exist a perfect system but rpi is as good as any.

It’s not uncommon in sports for the better team to not have home-field advantage in the playoffs. Just look at the Panthers in the NFL last year, or even how the MLB playoff format is set up. Being the better team doesn’t always mean you get to play at home.

I will agree with those comments! Starmount over many years has had some success playing on the road in the playoffs. The Ram faithful can travel well, and sometimes there is more energy with the fans just by being in a different atmosphere. I remember well the Rams played Charlotte Catholic at Myers Park High School in 1991, and won decisively. The Rams have played Maiden multiple times over the years, and has their number…winning in the western final at Maiden in ‘98. Had to travel to Tabor City to play South Columbus and won. In 2014, the Rams were not supposed to win against the former West Montgomery at Wadeville in the playoffs, but did. Sometimes seeding doesn’t matter, if you’re the better team.

I’ve said it’s been a three team race in the west between Corvian, Murphy, and Starmount since this summer.

It’s gonna be an interesting next 5 weeks to see where these teams land in RPI for seeding purposes.

Just want to let everyone know.. Murphy has 2 losses on the season and those 2 losses are to 6-0 Franklin who is #3 in 5a rankings in the state and Westside, SC who is ranked 5th in 4A (which is the 2nd biggest classification in SC) and 5-1. Westside also won their state championship in their class 2 years ago and was ranked 3rd in the state of SC during that season. Murphy is always known of having a brutal schedule in non-conference and they are getting better. I really don't see them losing a conference game but it appears they may be traveling to startmount this year as long as both teams take care of business and that will be a ticket everyone wants. Sleep on Murphy, that is fine.. they always show up in the end.

Looks like Warren County is on the verge of dropping down to the 3 seed in the East even as an undefeated team that hasnt given up a point since August 21st. I disagree with that but it is what it is. We have a chance to prove the system is flawed by going on the road and winning.

Y’all really need Nash Central and Roanoke Rapids to finish the season strong. I don’t see Vance County winning another game, and South Granville beating Orange would be a big help. I don’t see Webb or South Granville knocking off Seaforth, but if RR and NC could win out. Yall should be comfortably in the 2 and may be in play for the 1.

I hope you are right. I really think that scandal has hurt Roanoke Rapids. They were our toughest opponent but i see them losing every week and im puzzled. I respect Edenton and what they have done this year but I think we deserve at least a two seed. Their schedule may be slightly more difficult having played Northeastern but I think the way we have dominated our opponents we have proven our ranking. Playing higher classifications and margin of victory arent RPI factors though so we will see what happens. But no bulletin board material from me. Lol. Tarboro is great. Edenton is great. We will see how it plays out. Im actually looking forward to the competition. Too many high school games are non-competitive. I actually think some schools should evaluate whether they should even have a football program. But I understand that the kids that want to play would suffer if it wasnt available at their school.

What’s the status of Northampton. I saw they forfeited the 2nd half against yall the other night. Are they gonna finish the season?

They only dressed 15 or 16 guys against us. I was really shocked to see that. I dont know why their numbers are so down. Once a couple of their guys got hurt they were down to like 13 kids. Then on the opening drive of the second half we knocked their quarterback out and i guess their coach decided they couldnt continue. What I dont understand is that they have a combination middle school/jv team like everyone in our conference does. Im sure they have some 9th graders on that team that they could bring up to varsity. Maybe they have decided that the season is lost and they want to keep those guys on jayvee. But the way everyone makes the playoffs these days, I think they should pull those guys up and discontinue the jayvee team until next season. It wasnt long ago that they were a power program. As a fan of competition, I hate to see them decline.

How they finish the season maybe has the biggest impact on who gets the 1 seed. On all the scenarios I’ve ran if they lose out that will help you guys and Holmes.

If they could just win one more game, I think that will lock up the 1 seed for Tarboro but if they lose out it’s going to be extremely close.

Thats interesting. With WC and Weldon being the outliers, the other 4 teams in the conference I believe are roll of the dice games. Since they have played both outliers already, their last three games could go either way. They could win all three, lose all three or some combination. Their quarterback is a decent football player. If he is ok I would say they should win a couple. But like I said in my last post, they need to pull some jv kids up. You cant play a violent game like football with 15 kids.

Yeah because they are In yalls conference, everytime they lose now the last 3 weeks that means somebody else on yalls schedule got a win so it cancels out. Tarboro will just get credit for the loss.

Wont playing Weldon Friday, one of the worst teams in the State, drop our RPI?

Yes but Tarboro is playing beddingfield who is also winless so Tarboro will drop some too.
We welcome all challenges but I would prefer not to have to travel to Edenton. They are pretty good. We beat them in the fourth round of the playoffs last year without too much trouble but they seem to be much better.

Sidenote it's really sad to see how Northampton has fallen. I'm not sure what happened for them to fall off the way they have.
It is. I remember them having like a 3 or 4 year run where they were dominant. They had a couple of studs on that team. Im wondering if they had a coaching change or whether it was just a special group of kids. There is a difference between a great team and a great program.

From 2019-2022 they were really good. Gave Tarboro all they wanted in the playoffs in the fall of 21. Their former long time head coach left before the season.
