3 and outs

Has anyone done a deep dive looking in too how many 3 and outs we have had transitioning to a more pass heavy offense this season compared to the last few seasons. I’m just curious. It’s seems like we have more 3 and outs compared to maybe the last couple of years under Mullen as a more run based team. It seems like we definitely cover more ground faster if we do have a drive. Outside of the Georgia game it seems like we have trouble sustaining drives it’s either we score in a few plays or it’s a three and out.

Sounds like a good project for you...

Although i dont consider it a fair comparison even if it is worse. No one looks at what we are doing these past two weeks and thinks its the same offense as it was a month ago. Would be more fair to compare next year

Yeah, the offense we have right now is in no way similar to how we performed a month ago.

We are still not at all a finished product. But we are not anemic offensively, which is exactly what we were from Arkansas-Vanderbilt... Although we were playing without our entire two deep of OTs against Vandy, so hard to really hold that against us.

Three and outs are still a problem, but if you want it to be a fair comparison, look at games post-Rogers taking over (with an asterisk beside the Vandy game).

Comes with the territory with a passing offense. Same goes for tempo offenses, whether run or pass. I will say it does appear that we do have the ability to slow the game down and run the clock, especially when opposing defenses are in zone. I would imagine that over the years we will get pretty automatic on the short passes that are given to us.

Three and outs actually do not come with the territory at all when Leach gets his offense going. In Leach’s previous 16 seasons before this one, his offenses have gone 3-and-out on just 14.54% of their possessions. That is better than any FBS coach with 4+ years of experience.

Just like “his offense will never allow for his team to have a good run defense” and “Leach gets killed on ToP and forces his defense to stay on the field too long,” this is another myth about Leach’s system backed up by nothing more than a false narrative.

I was talking about passing offenses in a general sense, not necessarily just Leach's system. Obviously the more talent you have, the more effective the offense, thus less 3 and outs.

My main concern is our 3rd down conversion is atrocious mainly because we are in a lot of 3rd and longs because of a lot of low percentage plays. If you are just slightly off with a throw you are screwed and put your defense right back on the field. And on third and one we take so many risky shots being in that throw first mentality all the time where we are throwing this much. I just believe that the three and outs and the third down conversion rate would be so much better with if we could get to more of 65 to 35 or even 60 to 40 ratio of pass to run and mix it in more to make third down more manageable.
With will we are able to sustain more drives than we have been as he has had more time. But I do believe the offense would be much more potent and able to put up higher point totals if leach would slightly adapt. We just played the worst defense in the sec and put up 24. It’s better than we were a month ago but we are still a far cry from blazing on offense. That was the whole point of passing was the be able to move the ball down field and convert and put up high point totals. The problem with that is we aren’t staying on the field enough and converting enough 3rd downs to do that. I believe the the announcers said we are in the 100s as far as rank in 3rd down conversion. I know the kj games throw that off.

Our lack of a running game is what hurts us the most. When the opposing defense keeps dropping eight then we will HAVE to develop a semblance of a running game and only then will we be more successful. We should be licking our chops when defenses drop eight to have an even mediocre running game and only then will defenses stop dropping eight so much and allowing Leach to fully utilize his offense.

Teams aren’t rushing 3 against an offense with 7 guys on the LOS. It’s not like having 3 down lineman against Mullen or Saban, big difference when there’s only 5 OL. When a defense is in zone and every defender is watching the ball off the snap, it’s not so cut and dry that every run should be successful.
