3 things that stood out

Sorry I know theres tons of threads about last night but I'm at work and don't have time to read every post so I just wanted to throw my thoughts out there and read what others think later when I get home.

1.) Obviously, the defensive. There was a point in the 1st half where we literally lined up in the exact same formation every play as they drove down the field. The position of Newby & Gifford was so odd; just standing 15 yards from the nearest opposing player in that goofy *** stance. What is that? I'm praying its diaco doing some base defense but even for a base D, that was very weird.

2.) Where was wilbon and Ozigbo late in the game? Bryant was DEAD tired and running well but we were opening up some nice holes on those stretch plays and Bryant was hitting them but only getting a few when fresh legs there get much more, IMO. We pull bryant and camera shows him huffing and puffing on the sidelines then wilbon comes in and obvious pass play to him. Maybe run with wilbon? Please? He is a rb.

3.) Carlos Davis. Obviously that 15 yard penalty was atrocious. Yes, he was getting blocked into the qb but he forcefully lunged at his chest and pushed him down. Would have been 4th down but instead they keep possession and get a fg out of the drive. He had a few other plays where he was putting waayy too much extra roughness into players that were already down. It's been what, 5-7 yrs since football has really cracked down on late hits/unnecessary roughness (especially on qbs) and to see players continously do this is beyond frustrating. The staff needs to nip this in the *** immediately. I would pull a player for several plays if I saw this. Inexcusable.

Strongly agree with 2 and 3. Gates was also lucky not to get called for a couple of late hits. Good teams have more discipline than what c Davis/gates showed. Until the mindset/culture at NU changes (including developing a closer mindset at the end of games) the program will remain in purgatory.

On the three things focus:

• Lee is the real deal and puts the ball on the numbers with more consistency than we've been used to here.

• The defense showed an ability to adjust and it appeared the game was in hand after the third quarter.
• This team is going to be fun and maddening to watch this season. Stay positive and enjoy the ride. There's nothing nervous or angry fans can do to help things out.

I think the RB rotation is sometimes a bit curious, but then again, Wilbon had a couple points where he showed he wasn't ready to handle a huge load of downs. On one of his handful of carries he fumbled the ball at the boundary. He was also the RB in when Lee got rocked by the DL that one play.

Will it matter though? I really question our talent level on that side of the ball. Perhaps it was the guys swimming in the new scheme but it looked like our guys had cement in their shoes.

And like then, we won't really know what Arkansas State is or NU is until we get down the road a ways. We won a game that we could have easily lost late. I predict that Arkansas State is going to once again win their conference, make a bowl game, maybe win that bowl game, and likely have a DE go early in the NFL draft.

This makes no sense. There's not much to hide with a defensive scheme, so I don't get the point in hiding it. ASU runs a similar offense to Oregon so I think it would have been a great opportunity to unleash our best defense and shut ASU down and work on adjustments from there. I hope you are right though because Diaco didn't look like he knew how to make even the most basic defensive adjustments against ASU.

This makes no sense. There's not much to hide with a defensive scheme, so I don't get the point in hiding it. ASU runs a similar offense to Oregon so I think it would have been a great opportunity to unleash our best defense and shut ASU down and work on adjustments from there. I hope you are right though because Diaco didn't look like he knew how to make even the most basic defensive adjustments against ASU.

Willie Taggart's offense is similar in look only. They are a run first spread read option team first. They will hit screens and short passes, but they do not throw swing pass after swing pass. Their bit weapon is a 230 lb running back and he will be utilized. If Oregon throws more than 25-30 passes next week I will be shocked, and they will be no where near 70 passes

We have some 'hot shot' attitudes here and there on the team. I thought a little too much ego from a few of our players.

Tanner Lee played a nice game. A couple of times, he almost got us in trouble with ill advised throws as well as the one that could have been intentional grounding. He took only a few hits, and got out of the pocket when he had to, but I do wish he was more mobile.

I thought the Arkansas State QB was one heck of a player. That guy has some swag. That team didn't quit either. Good reflection on their coaching staff.

I still don't like how Mike Riley appears to be a spectator on the sideline when the game is on the line. It was reminiscent of year 1. I guess he just lets his assistants do all the work? Maybe it's not that big of a deal, but seeing him smiling over there by himself gives the impression he's not an active participant.

It looks like our strength coach went and got fat. Maybe mistaken identity on my part.

I doubt the swing pass was Arkansas State's entire offense either but it was working and we couldn't stop it, so they kept running it. Oregon will do the same thing if we don't figure out how to stop it.

Re: Riley smiling - I noticed it and thought about it as well. I do the same thing when things seem to work against me. It's my method for keeping sanity. It certainly doesn't mean I don't care but I also have found that showing angry face or stomping up and down can't change anything so I prefer to keep my sanity.

I get why the optics don't appear that great to fans, but it really doesnt bother me.

I don't understand the lack of touches for Wilbon if he is truly 1b.

Love Bryant's vision, he needs to finish runs and keep his leg churn going.

No offense but this is one of the more moronic posts I've seen in a while. Our guys get credited with "too much of a hot shot attitude" as a negative and two sentences later the opponents QB gets credit for having all kinds of swag? And its a positive reflection on their staff?

If anything, the fact that our guys have attitude and fire when a bunch of negative nellies think Riley is coaching like Mr. Rogers with one foot in the grave, is a credit to *our* staff.

I believe Oregon will run their offense but I dont see them not using any bubble screens after seeing ASU have so much success with it. Either way if the D stays in that 2 high shell with safeties 20 yards off the ball Oregon will get the ball to guys with speed underneath the coverage or maybe gash us with the zone read and march down the field. I want to believe we wont see a repeat of this. Only time will tell.

You don't understand the difference? I saw a lot of "me, me, me" from guys on the team. Running down the field with a #1 in the air.. so lucky he didn't get penalized for that. That is not swag. The opposing QB wasn't acting like he was the lone superstar on the team. Your post is absolutely silly in trying to equate the two things. Pull your head out of your behind.

I would say a winning demeanor, but obviously some fans aren't even happy with that.
