Sure it's an eye popping number but you have to remember almost 50% of that goes back to Local/State/Fed taxes. Plus there are a lot of people who benefit from Drew Brees being the QB of the Saints. Collectively that benefit far exceeds the 40 Million he makes.

Sort of like movie stars, yeah it's rediculous someone can get paid 20 million to repeat a few lines and show their wares but it is what puts butts in the seats.

It's thousands and thousands of small financial decisions by fans that generate the revenue and create the demand that produces a player with that salary. <div>
</div><div>Let's say there are a million Saints fans. Now let's say Brees produces $100 worth of happiness for each of them over the next five years. (For simplicity's sake, we won't account for whatever costs are born by him and the organization to produce and deliver that happiness). There you go: $100M paycheck--not because he did one thing worth that much or that he as a person is inherently worth that much but because many, many people have decided (or the organization predicts that they will decide) that he gives them some small amount of pleasure.</div><div>
</div><div>Does Drew Brees' salary affect my life? Nope. (Other than the theoretical $100 worth of entertainment he's predicted to give me as a Saints fan. And just $20 a year--what a deal!) </div><div>
</div><div>Americans spent $3.7B on toilet paper in 2008 (http://www.usatoday.com/money/advertising/2008-01-08-toilet-paper-marketing_N.htm). Worth it? Well, millions of people made small decisions that indicate they thought it was. If you don't like it then buy government issue tissue. </div><div>

It's a business investment by Tom Benson. If at the end of the day, he thinks paying Drew Brees $40mil will make him more than $40mil, then he's worth it to the only man that matters. I happen to agree that the fascination with sports has drivenit into a disgustinglyoverpaid/overfunded business, but that's what happened. That's what people pay for.

And I know people like to say that kind of money is ridiculous and they would play for free. Well, if Mr. Benson let me play quarterback for free, he might save $40mil on the front end, but he'd probably lose the franchise in two years because he wouldn't make a dime.

If someone's gonna get rich off of him playing, shouldn't it be him? I share your frustration in that he makes more in 1 day than I make all year but hey, that's what the market demands so more power to him.

And let me add that it's a shame Drew Brees showed up at Wizard's house and stole his money.

How many people on earth can do what Drew can, at the level at which he does it?

I don't know why they're working their assess off to live pay check to pay check when they could just go produce the value that Brees does and be rich...

I agree with Wizard, all these 10's and 100's of millions of dollars going to pro athletes, while most families areworking 3 jobs, trying to put food on the table, trying to pay the bills, and so on and so on. I do agree that there are some players that do great work off the field and use that money to give back to the community, but you still have athletes that will waste it on bigger houses, bigger and more expensive cars, and whores, butit's getting to a pointisone person really worth all that money?

Would they buy box seats? Would they be willing to travel to do it and pay for a hotel, food, beer, gas, etc.? Would people be so happy to let others know they watch what you do at work that they purchase gear with your name on it and even gear from the company without your name on it just because you work there?Ifyour fanscouldn't travel, would they religiously watch what you are doing as it is being taped live by a major news station who is paying for the taping through multimillion dollar advertisement contracts? Those advertisers are banking on millions of people watching how good you are at your job and take the risk. So, would advertisers see you as a good investment?

How much the super star players make is absolutely crazy. It is notnearly as crazy as thepurchasing power of the pro sports fanbases though.

Here you sit wasting time and money on a sports message board. Yet a billion people live on less than a dollar a day. You are their Drew Brees.

I assume that you know this basic fact. I also assume that you are not a moral monster. So you must intuit that your wealth is not the cause of their poverty. And neither is Brees's wealth the cause of any American's relative "poverty."

It's not his fault that nobody wants to pay a lot of money to watch some dude sling packages or put cars together. The fact of the matter is that there are only 2 or 3 people in the entire world that can do Brees' job as well as he can.

There's a ton of crony capitalism involved here: taxpayer money for stadiums, sweetheart deals including tax breaks and rights to taxes (can keep sales taxes on items sold in the stadium), subsidies and all sorts of other benefits that aren't available to other businesses are given to owners of professional sports teams. And unlike the subsidies available to companies like Exxon, I can't become a stockholder in the Saints (Green Bay is different). And most cities and states find that sports franchises don't actually come with significant economic benefits. They are psychologically rewarding, though.

But, as a Saints fan, I happy that Brees is finally under contract. He's a uniquely gifted athlete and seems like a decent person. He gives them a chance to be in the Super Bowl in New Orleans (Defense should be better this year). Who Dat.

They've raised over $11 million related to their mission statement: "Improving the quality of life for cancer patients, and provide care, education and opportunities for children and families in need".

Drew is opening Jimmy Johns restaurants in the city and area and creating much needed jobs.

In the last 6 years, he has made the Saints an elite franchise in the most popular sports league in our country. He has had a huge influence on the value of the team, making the Saints way more valuable than the guaranteed money in his contract. Without Drew,no way Benson would be able to purchase a frigginNBA franchiseinaddition to owning the Saints.

Put a value on the Saints winning Super Bowl XLIV for the fans and the economics of the city and region.

The economic revenue he has generated and the impact of his charity work really is remarkable, and he's worked the last 6 years at about half of his market value. The Saints got a steal.
