4th Quarter

Can't speak for the fans in their 20's but us older fans remember living through Ron Cooper and Steve Kragthorpe. Both were not prepared in any way to lead the program their predecessors had lifted to unfamiliar heights.

Cooper can be given a break because the program was in no means a major college football program. Kragthorpe on the other hand almost destroyed the program that had seen top 5 rankings and big bowl wins. It took three seasons before he was fired for obvious reasons.

Coach Satterfield came in that first year after the debacle of Petrino's sabotage and looked like he was going to turn it around but now after two consecutive seasons of ill prepared defenses and predictable offenses, he's looking like another Kragthorpe.

The players for Louisville play as hard as any past team as the slew of injuries have attested to. It's the coaching that apparently doesn't coach as hard as needed to win these close games.

If it were just a couple of times it would just be an anomaly but it's every single time that this staff makes the wrong decisions in the 4th quarter. The results speak for themselves and I just don't see it changing anytime soon with this staff.

Yeah but at least 50% of those fans are apparently looking every year no matter the coach. Weak *** fan base.
I don’t necessarily disagree but some of the issue is that when we do get behind a coach 100% we have gotten burned, first by JLS, BP 1.0 and Strong. It’s a two way street albeit a very thin line.

From David Hale:

In the past 2 years, Louisville has lost five games in which it was tied or ahead in the fourth quarter. Among P5 teams, only Texas has more (6, including 3 in the past month).
Hey, that's pretty good territory! ;)

So true. The Louisville program can't keep a very good coach and have to put up with not so good coaches. There's never any sustainable development due to this. All of us complaining about Satterfield do not want to. We were hoping he was the man even though we know he's gone if he won 10 games here.

I love college football. I love UofL sports but I have accepted that the only thing that would consider us a top level program is being in the ACC. Lamar Jackson was a distraction that saw us a top 5 team for a fleeting moment, but even number 8's brilliance didn't lead the program to top level status.

If Lamar couldn't do it, who can?

It's my opinion until a head coach who wants to be here past a great season or two, we're going to continue to see the kind of product we're seeing today. Which is a coaching staff who should be at a AAC school, not a power conference.

I agree once a coach looses the fanbase it is almost impossible to get them back. There are only 2 things that will bring them back and some fans will never be happy.

Winning and Recruiting. That is it. Good recruiting buys coaches time when loosing.

I think he will survive this year but they could lose the next 3. Tyra may be forced but my guess is he wants to give him year 4.

Refs with a few horrific calls, the Malik injury and the coach with the clip board cost us in breaking that 7 yr losing streak.

For the most part I agree with you on this. However, the refs mad a few really tough calls that aided UofL. IE the CU TD pass that the receiver just barely came down with his foot on the line...ruled incomplete with replay.

And then Malik's pass to the receiver at the 2 foot line that put us in position to win the game...refs made the right call but it took several replay angles to confirm that that was indeed a good catch.

So the refs and breaks weren't as bad as usual for the Cards.

cdrck said in another thread that of the final 4 plays that 2 pass plays were called....I don't know his source...but that info makes me feel even worse...especially for Malik who just wants to win so bad that he tries too hard and the results are what they are.

I thought the defense played valiantly and with courage against a superior (4-5) star studded team. I am very proud of their effort. The team deserved to win this game. But life in football isn't always fair or just. Gotta regroup and win the next game.

Could lose the next 3, yes. But I fully expect to win the next two, and for that third game to be just as competitive as the one we just witnessed.

I’m not sure I can put my finger on it - every situation is different, certainly - but I have the feeling I’ve seen this trend before….

1991, right after the glorious Fiesta Bowl, when Jeff Brohm broke his leg, and we bottomed out in a disastrous 2-9 season, where we were barely competitive. So many young players who didn’t know how to win yet!

Follow that up in 1992 with an up and down season where we stumbled out of the gate and ended up with a second straight frustrating losing season at 5-6. But all of that suffering was just the crucible that led to a glorious 9-3 season with wins over Arizona State, Pitt, Texas and the Liberty Bowl win over Michigan State.

And that’s just one of the many examples throughout our history where young players learned hard lessons early in their careers and eventually put it all together to accomplish a season worth remembering.

I love the fight in this team, and I can’t help but think 2022 is going to be our year.

2022 gonna hinge on QB position. Recruiting Malik (and getting him a good NIL deal) to stay is job 1. If that doesn’t work out, then a good transfer portal QB is a must.

Winning is great and also recruiting but I will also add we need local guys and/or caliber guys like Teddy and Lamar, not every so often but consistently. Remember when we had Bush and Brohm. The city was united and tuned into the program.

I agree 2022 is going to be a big year for the program. They will have a bunch of people back plus they should be able to hit the portal for key positions.

The roster will take some hits with transfers but they have shown the ability to identify players in the portal.
