I know I'm in the vast minority here, but I think the better play is to not extend him this year, so his buyout decreases next year. Throw everything at next year. Bring in some better O-Lineman, bring in as much talent and depth as we can. Spend the money on players this offseason, instead of yet another buy out just to have another reset that likely results in us doing the same thing again 3 years from now. The offense works with KT and Lebby. We beat 3 quality teams in our first 4 games when we were healthy. Next year, the offense brings back 9 starters, if we can keep them all. We need a stud WR (this staff has a track record of being able to do that), a quality back-up QB, a new LT, and some OL depth. Break the bank, go all in. The offense will score next year, as long as KT stays healthy. Maybe he won't. But him learning a new system going into his last year in college is not a good idea. Heck, he may leave. I know a lot of you think that may not be a bad thing because he hasn't stayed healthy, but he's the best QB we've ever had, and ever will have. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. It's a gamble, because he may just be injury prone. But it's a better bet than starting over. We can always start over after next year. There is no coach out there that will come make us a contender next year. Bringing this offense back next year gives us a puncher's chance. That's better than 95% of seasons at MSU. Roll the dice, go for broke. it's not like one more 3 win season will matter to our history if we roll snake eyes.

Keeping an incompetent coach for 1 more year to save on the buyout is short sighted, cheapskate, Larry Templeton thinking. Whatever the buyout is, when it's time to fire a coach, you're better off paying it and starting over than waiting for the buyout to go down.

Negotiate his buyout down, split it into separate payments, help him find a new job, whatever it takes to make the buyout affordable.

The cost of the buyout is pretty small compared to the loss of future revenue and donations due to continuing this train wreck.

Every single hotel, restaurant, gas station, apparel store, etc. in the region should be willing to chip in for the buyout.

Fire him so we can just hire another unproven coordinator and hope it works? We hire 1st year HC who hire first year coordinators with first year AD’s and wonder why it’s not working. Mullen is the only coordinator hire that’s worked for us. The other successful hire was Leach and he was a successful HC before that. I don’t think Lebby is the guy but if you fire him and hire another unproven coordinator might as well keep what we got unless you get a HC with experience.

The issue is that he’s had 48MM in nil money combined over the last three seasons and hasn’t been able to do anything you point out. So this year’s 40Mm will net results the same ****

I’m starting to wonder if your account has been hacked, either now or a few weeks ago.

You came back from your hiatus and are now making all kinds of sense.
Not hacked. I said I would wait it out and if they struggled I would make my decision. I also had some conversations with others that have me concerned the longer we keep him the worse it’s going to get. When you have coaches who won’t drive 30min down the road to recruit DL, and they aren’t being pushed by the HC. You got bigger problems

The only reason to just wait out his contract and fire him next year is if there's also a guarantee that we'll have different people hiring the next coach. But that ain't happening either.

Unfortunately, that's not much in today's world. But, I concede you may be right. I'm not hard up on this either way. The writing is likely on the wall, and ultimately, my opinion doesn't matter.

My main point is this - The offense with KT at the helm looked unstoppable when we were healthy. Next year is like 2018 all over again. There's a chance it could be a great year if we have continuity. I think if we start over, there's a really high chance next year becomes a "what could have been year". I get it - Lebby is not a great HC. Next year may suck under him. But it almost certainly sucks with someone new. I think it's worth taking a chance on next year. It's not a hill I'm dying on though. Whatever - not up to me. I just won't be crying hysterically if we keep him one more year.

You and other spent a lot of time telling us how Leach would not do this and that was our problem, and Lenny had corrected it. Now he hasn't?

First goat. I never ever said anything bad or negative on leach. Yes I said his recruiting was bad but not his coaching. I was damn near banned on Jortspage when I said point blank we made a bad hire in Arnette as HC. So don’t make **** up thinking you know anything.

The “what-if” thoughts are understandable but when they creep in I have to ask myself what Lebby has done aside from calling some nice plays. Do you think he will actually identify and get the linen he needs? I don’t. Do you think he will get a SEC starter type QB? I don’t. He’ll get a nice WR that can do what’s needed. He can probably get some serviceable guys on the DL and LB room. Given what I’ve seen from his recruiting so far I believe there’s a solid chance he will blow it again.
Kamario Taylor has only had seven starts but has had significant injuries twice. I think there is a better than even chance he will have significant injuries again next year and we will be sitting here pondering the same thing. You have to ask if the results on the field are acceptable regardless of how they got there because the results still fall on Jeff Lebby.

As far as the money goes, Bo Bounds had a good segment with a guy named Mike Chaudron. He explains buyouts and etc.

If you're Mississippi State, I'm not sure you would pay the full $6.75 owed to Lebby. That's assuming his contract is similar to other coaches and that if he takes a job elsewhere, the buyout is mitigated. However Jeff Lebby won't get a HC job if fired at State. He will most certainly get a OC job

which btw, he is safe if State wins this weekend.

Another money decision for State will be for Taylor. How high are you willing to go for an injury prone player that all of CFB is in love with?? You can get a damn good QB in the portal for $4-5million. But Taylor is a fan favorite and helluva marketing tool in the preseason/early season.

If Taylor holds out for $7-8million, you will still need another $1-2million for a backup qb AND you are HC shopping...... ouch.

Who are you and what have you done with bd77?
If you paid any attention to my post in the past I said that if the facts changed so would my opinion. Based on results on the field, recruiting and a few conversations I had last week and this week about the current state of “inside these walls”. I’m out on Lebby as should every single fan, and donor. We are a cluster in more ways that what what you see on Saturday

Reading this thread it’s like everyone is just assuming we’ll lose to Vandy. I’m not convinced of that at all. If Lebby wins 6, he’s not going anywhere.
I’m not convinced we can score Pat. 0-15-3. That’s our last three games. I’m not even sure If Swann is good to go by Saturday. Add that fluff is more than likely out, the turnstile that is LT might actually be worse without McVay. Puckett is one play from us trotting out McWorter or Rashada

Vandy is not that talented, but they are well coached and will have the better QB. That doesn’t bode well for us.

I get what you’re saying. But all of those teams are much much better than Vandy and were at home. Not saying we’ll win. But it wouldn’t surprised me if we did.

They have a young talented QB and a really good WR. Well coached, that’s debatable. They lost to ARK damn lucky to beat NCSTATE

I don’t see it with our current QB situation. I expect to see Swann on the questionable list this evening

These are all fair points and, yes, I have the same thoughts. But the fact remains - Kamario is a Heisman-level QB, and he loves MSU. His #1 goal is winning at a high level at MSU. I'm in my mid-40s. I think he'll be the last MSU QB I ever see that has both of those traits. To me, it's worth whatever it takes to give him the shot he deserves. I think his best shot is with Lebby's offense. They seem to thrive together.

As for the rest - that was my original point. Do I trust Lebby to do any of that? No, not really. But push all the chips to the middle this offseason. That $6.75M buyout? Put that in NIL instead. Try to go buy the best pieces we can get. Money talks. Go all in. If you fail, so what? We're probably going to fail next year anyway. You just delay things by one year, risking it for something big.

Lebbys not the only coach that runs this variation of the wide choice or for that matter an offense that could get Taylor in the Heisman discussion in 27 . Another piece is if your return Lebby, what has he shown you that make you believe that he can shore up the protection on the OL. In three years he hasn’t. On the play K1 was injured against Mizz had he given the ba to fluff he wouldn’t be hurt. Had we blocked the DL, he wouldn’t be hurt.
I never thought I’d see MSU fans defend a coach who in all probability will finish year three with 12/13 wins, while our rival continue to ascend with their 2nd coach

The coaching account isn’t the same as NIL pool. So that shouldn’t be an issue
