No sh**. I mean they seriously work 7 months out of the year. And now with the NTI, only the teachers get snow days, the kids and parents do the homework. After the Covid shutdown I honestly lost a lot of respect for the position. I think they’re fairly compensated with tons of benefits.
You must not know many teachers if you're thinking that way

Look - I feel like no one has mentioned this - but the reason there is a teacher shortage is not because it’s some incredibly impossible job like a coal miner, or because they aren’t paid well, or because blah blah blah. THERES A SHORTAGE IN ALMOST EVERY SINGLE JOB IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW. Truck drivers, nurses, restaurant workers, even airline pilots all have a shortage. My specific industry is actually one of the hardest hit. It’s a really strange time right now, I have no idea where the f*ck anyone even is but at some point people will have to work again. But thankfully it’s turned into another thread talking about how difficult teaching is and how they need paid more even though they’re going through the exact same thing most industries are.

Depends on how you define difficult. Many of my posts reflect the fact I don't think it's that difficult and, lead by the unions and their vocal minority, many in the profession moan and whine about everything.

However there is/was a sizable portion held over from before the days of the profession being hijacked by the unhinged and insane. Those are the people who need retained because they got into the profession for the right reasons. Those are also the ones leaving in droves because their job barely resembles what they signed up for.

What will be left are just activists in disguise or those who just can't or won't find another job.

It's a disaster and entirely avoidable

"hijacked by the unhinged and insane." Gee, wonder where you got this from and why you believe there's a nationwide epidemic of the insane.

I'm finding myself bringing this up more and more on this board but it's because some here have really leaned into it more recently - stop acting like Libs of TikTok is real life. That damn account has taught more than a few here that every profession, particularly teaching jobs, have been taken over by the mentally insane and the insanity is spreading from coast to coast. Social media has gullible olds believing every teacher is demanding sex changes for five year olds and kids are running through school halls peeing in litter boxes. For whatever reason, this board has turned sorta anti-teacher the last few years. Not saying they're heroes, but when did it become cool to just **** all over someone's profession?

Ron has it right. For whatever reason (maybe the govt. handing out checks repeatedly like jackasses) there are shortages across the board and I'm not sure what people who don't want to work are actually doing for money. Maybe they're selling **** on Etsy. Anyway, the jobs are out there for the taking.

-if vouchers were to become reality, existing private schools couldn't service the demand...new schools/more options = greater competition.

-I'm a public school guy, both of my kids did or are doing well in public...I/my wife have the means/knowledge to navigate the system and supplement/bolster education as needed. Many don't. Our district is/was fine, that said if I had an elementary aged kid *now* I would go the private route. 100%.

-the amount of public money per student spent in KY and nationwide for that matter is more than adequate /on par with other 1st world countries. There is no need for more money.

^one can argue how that money is spent in the US is "broken"...but that's a different topic.
Actually it is the topic. That it's broken is why no amount of money will fix it. Need other systems.

No but they can and would expand to meet demand. It's normal for any industry to adjust to a volume/demand increase.

By contrast, public schools would lose teachers and students with lightning speed. They'd either adjust or die.

Who wins? The consumer, which is the parent and the child.

LOL. Yea. The parents that got kicked out of pta meetings for showing pictures in books that their kids are being given in class.... Is all in our head. The problem with your "its just a few" theory is that the evidence suggests it is far more than a few. They aren't teaching tolerance. Its that there is a segment of educators that want to move the moral compass wayyy out of norm. We don't teach kids math, science and history but they sure know pronouns and climate change.

As a former administrator, who still works in the field of education, I can say this is dumb. There’s going to be a lot of money changing hands and none of it will be going to teachers or students. Want to attract and retain teachers?

1. Make their pay competitive with other states. KY is in the mid 40s for teacher salary. Incentivize good performance.

2. Reduce the student to teacher ratio. Study after study shows that students in smaller classrooms outperform their peers.

3. Actually punish students who are behavior problems and hold parents accountable when underage students can’t manage their behaviors. Mom and dad do not want to be in the court system.

4. Stop holding students with learning disabilities to the same standards as normal students. (Alternative testing).

5. Revamp standards so students can specialize when they’re ready. Math standards alone are ridiculous and most are meaningless to the majority of the population. 8th graders should not be solving systems of equations when 99.9% will never use it in the real world. Waste of time.

I am sensitive to parents with kids with learning disabilities, but I think it's insane to put kids with severe learning disabilities in the same classroom as kids without them.

Agree. Goes both ways too. Those kids can't get the attention they need either. This was a well intentioned move that just practically never made sense

Agree 100%, and we hold them to the same standard as a student without a learning disability. Then the state claims all they need is for someone to read, write and a few other accommodations to be proficient.

1. That ranking needs to be adjusted for cost of living in the various states. I doubt that number is. KY would move up if it was.
2. I.e., throw more money at the issue that hasn't worked yet.
3. leftists would allow it screaming discrimination & courts will uphold. Voucher-fed private schools could inforce behavior.
4. Obviously. How do you plan to stop it?
5. Kids that can't do basic math to make goods purchase choices, and understand pecentages will be at huge disadvantages in the real world. And don't tell be they can use calculators because those are useless if the inputs aren't correct.

The OP and my post is about recruiting and retaining teachers. Not the ills of the American Education System, although there are many!

1. Competitive pay would attract and retain more teachers.

2. You’re either misinformed or being dishonest Research continually shows that reduced class sizes lead to increased student performance. Research also shows larger class sizes lead to more behavior problems and less individual towards struggling students. Research also shows large classes and discipline issues as a reason for teachers leaving and others not considering the profession. It’s not just a throwing money idea. It’s the only thing that money isn’t thrown at because no one in the industry can get a kick back from it.

3. Not gonna disagree completely, although I don’t think you have a clear understanding of private schools. I’ve worked with them through consulting. They’re not the conservative safe havens you think. Most are in suburban or inner city schools where rich liberals try to school their kids away from poor liberals. Ed Reform is a better answer for teacher recruitment/detainment.

4. Complete education reform.

5. I think you accidentally agreed with me on that one.
