I mean Mack and UTcomes a calling after 1 successful season from us... Our D has always been fairly strong... of course it was much better this past season. When things get tough, Mack always goes to the SEC for help.

I am still utterly shocked that he got offered the Texas DC job after one pretty good year at a BCS conference school. Just would have thought Mack Brown would have gone after someone with a little more of a proven track record.

I've heard that Mack wasn't entirely pleased with the media and fans in general asking him at every press conference when he was going to retire and let Muschamp take over. By bringing in Diaz, no one is going to immediately assume he is the heir apparent.

Still, that's a lot of money to pay Diaz. With the incentives, that's not significantly less than what they were paying their "coach in waiting." I was shocked when I read that.

If you're a coach and you either allow or take the strategy of having a head coach in waiting on your staff, you better have a retirement plan for less than 5 years down the line.

What good is a head coach in waiting if you're going to coach another decade?

They can take a risk on a hot young coach and not be concerned about money. Plus even though his rise has been very quick I think Diaz is destined for success.

I think every DC in the country knows the shelf life for a college HC is 10 years now a days. Also, coming off a bad year by Texas standards, Mack is on the hot seat. Any good DC isn't leaving what they have for that situation. After Mack is canned, the opportunity will come open again. So Duaz was probably the best they could get to bite on the offer.

Less than chump change! It is only 0.625% of their new ESPN contract for the UT network!

Being a native Texan.... my two favorite teams are MSU and whoever is playing the Longhorns.
