If college football won't put its foot down and force Notre Dame to join a conference -- as every other sport at Notre Dame has -- then the least it can do is stop paying it a bowl bonus of $1.3 million when it DOESN'T go to a bowl game. That's right: Notre Dame gets a $1.3 million bowl bonus simply for dressing up the stupid leprechaun.

So ND gets a a bowl bonus of $1.3 million even when ND doesn't make a bowl, or am I reading that wrong?

There are a million reasons to hate ND. Too bad Reilly only mentioned a thousand of them.

That bowl bonus pissed me off. They get a 1.3 Million dollar bonus even if they don't go to a bowl? Now that is ********.

..is because the typical American who doesn't keep up with college football "always roots for Notre Dame."

That's why NBC has them locked down to an exclusive TV contract: Because uncle Bill the comptroller who doesn't even like college football will watch ND out of a sense of patriotism.

It's called the "American Super Bowl Syndrome:" At my work, you could ask everybody who is your favorite NFL team. 90% of the people would always answer the last winner of the Super Bowl. Same syndrome applies to ND.

As for the $1.3M for not going to a BCS bowl, every team in Div. I-A gets a share of the BCS pie whether their conference is represented in a BCS bowl or not. But for Notre Dame to get about 3 times what the rest of them get on average is just wrong. Hopefully that will be addressed with the new playoff system. It's way past time to start treating Notre Dame the same as every other school is treated. If you want to stay independent, fine. You're no different than any other independent. If you want to join a conference, that's fine too as long as you and the conference can agree on the terms.

People have good reason to not like or hate Notre Dame, but Rick Reilly is about 5-10 years late with this column. Those things have been discussed ad nauseam really since the birth of the BCS and for me just points to Reilly's overall laziness as a columnist. Again hating Notre Dame is warranted, but Rick Reilly is the pits.

I was raised to love Notre Dame since I'm Catholic, but I also hate them because of obvious reasons stated earlier in this thread (In addition to going to an SEC school). When Notre Dame is playing anyone outside the SEC I'll root for them, but if they're playing an SEC member I root against them. Either way if they win or lose I don't give much of a ****.
