A few things about Cam Newton

Based on what others have posted around the interwebs, Jeremy Crabtree, Rivals.com's man in charge, was on the radio in Memphis this morning (Lapadies? or something). He said Cam is the best QB in this recruiting class, high school or JUCO. He also apparently said that we are the leader in the clubhouse but OU may really make a push for him this weekend as they supposedly aren't content with what they have on campus, which I find odd based on Landry Jones' numbers.

Also, I know that recruiting rankings don't necessarily mean ****, but Cam is now a 5-star recruit on Rivals. In my almost decade of following recruiting I can only remember us signing four 5-stars--Jerious, Darren Williams, Culberson and Deljuan.

The importance of signing Cam for Coach Mullen and staff cannot be overstated.

Edited to add the referenced rankings are those of Rivals.com.

But I get your point. I think he is the total package. This would be such a huge pickup for us, and if you are one of the high school guys in the state of MS, and we bring a guy like him in here, why would you not want to come here. This pickup could really help us out in terms of being able to pull in a great class. He's definitely one you can build a class around.

You may be correct about Scout but I always reference Rivals when discussing rankings/stars. They had Andrews as a 3-star and Turner/Byrdwong were 4-stars. I try to stick with one database and not jump around based on who ranks us higher and have always thought Rivals, as a network, was better.

Rivals also had Pegues as a 4-star. I should have clarified that in my original post.

Yeah, I probably should have clarified that Pegues was a 5 star on Scout. It can get confusing switching back and forth between Rivals and Scout. I usually only go back and forth if one of the sites has a guy as a 1 star and the other has them evaluated and rated already.

I heard Crabtree come on as I was pulling into work. I wanted to sit and the car and listen to it, but as usaul, Lipides spent 5 minutes with him talking about how cold it was and what he had for breakfast.

if Cam choses OU

OU has landry and a 5star Blake Bell (6'-6 215lb) coming in... making cam a TE could be a reasonable suggestion.

IF Cam's main goal is to come in and "be the guy" he isn't going to chose OU.

I would be worried about Auburn and if he visits there.

and your point is still valid - newton would be a HUGE get. probably moreso than any of those other guys because he is a QB, has experience in the system, and would likely step in as a starter. and, of course, we had a glaring hole at QB this year.

because allegedly Newton wants to play in a offense that is pro-style and Mullen has allegedly told him that we would add in some pro-style formations for him. I could see Mullen doing that moreso than Mahlzahn.

That said, Pat Patterson also told some people that he wanted to play in a spread offense.

Wow that's quite demanding for a QB. Mullen wants him real bad. He's saying jump, Mullen says when. Which is fine if Newton delivers. But I have to say it's a little self serving to ask because it's all to prove himself to the NFL so that he doesn't become scrutinized like Tebow which is exactly the kind of QB he is. But if Mullen is willing to accomodate, what the heck.

surely he was a 5 star on both rivals and scout.

To think of the talent Sherril brought in and then let us slip just makes me depressed. And darkness at 5:15 isn't helping either.

about how he could be a multi-millionaire sitting in a mansion right now if he hadn't been such a dumbass.

You're probably correct, but that was before I really followed recruiting. Those were the pre-Scout days...it was theinsiders.com then.

Well, you just can't help but get the feeling that MSU will never sign a QB of Newton's ranking/caliber outside of the rare home-grown MS product such as Russell. We've been through this sort of thing before, with the obvious example of Ryan Perrilloux coming to mind. I hope this isn't a repeat,. but it feels like it. And what's worse is that we've been on Newton the hardest and longest, and a player like AU could come in at the last minute and remind us once again the difference between the haves and have nots.

Perrilloux was coming to Starkville is an idiot.
