A few week 5 thoughts

1. It was week 5 right? I know it was game 2 for some teams and game 3 for some others. Just 6 weeks left in the season!
2. Looks like games Monday and Tuesday will be wet ones.
3. I still have not seen a team in Region 1A that is as good as Essex or Sussex of a year ago.
4. Where's the middle in Region 1A. Lots of really struggling teams and others that are above average. Are there is teams that grade a C?
5. Northumberland should be 5-0 when they open NND play.
6. And speaking of the NND right now it appears it is legitimately a 5 team race at this point.
7. Let's see how Essex responds to its 1-2 start. The have 2 games this week. 1-4 would be a disaster. 2-3 not good. 3-2 much better.
8. West Point might be a tough out in the first round of the regional playoffs.
9. King & Queen has a good chance to go 4-5 this season.

Couple of thoughts:

Kind and queen only plays 8 games, correct? While I am happy they got their win, they have Mathews, WP, Middlesex, and KW. Left Mathews is their best chance at another win. But the other 3 are going to be tough games.
West point will be more than a tough out. They'll probably be a top 4 seed and host in round 1.

I'd say there's 9 maybe 10 teams in the running for a playoff spot in region A.

K&Q is taking a forfeit win from Charles City. So they have two wins. Mathews and Middlesex are their best shots at getting two more wins.

Charles City isn't on the vhsl schedule at all. I figured that since most teams found an alternate opponent, teams to decided not to would just not have that 9/10th game. But hey count it as a WIN. Good for them, they had enough players to have a team, CC did not. Guess it's a win in a sense. K+Q should feel good about it.

When Charles City elected to not field a team the VHSL gave their scheduled opponents 3 options: 1. Take a forfeit. 2. Play a 9-game schedule. or 3. Find an opponent to fill the vacancy. I would figure teams expected to be below .500 will take the forfeit to get the 16 points, while those who figure to finish above .500 will play 9 games since the 16 points would likely be a detriment to their final rating. I believe Cumberland, Southampton, Franklin, Colonial Beach, Mathews and West Point found opponents to fill the vacancies. W&L, KW, K&Q, and Middlesex have not. I suspect KW will go with 9 games, not sure about W&L. K&Q is taking the forfeit and I suspect Middlesex will do the same.

Whether a team takes the forfeit or decides to just count it as a 9 game season can have an impact on power points. Middlesex and KQ take forfeit and that's 2 bonus points for teams that beat them. I applaud WP for trying to fill their schedule and take on another opponent.
