Tom Crean was already a proven winner at Marquette. Rick Ray was an assistant on a losing Clemson team.

1st year head coaching job comparison.

While Pittsburgh(Cal assistant coach) was a better team than Clemson, the point is one year is NO indicator of the kind of coach he is. Especially the hand he has been dealt.

OK, that's a better comparison. So, if Ray decides to cheat his *** off, he can win.

This year's team showed more hustle and effort than the last two teams under....

Berry...I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do with a full roster and the players that he signs. Anyone who judges Ray in a negative sense based on everything that has happened this year is full of **** and has an agenda. That is all....

No agenda - It was time for Stans to go

But I did think it was a bad hire when it was made, and I've seen nothing to suggest otherwise thus far.

If you've seen nothing to suggest otherwise, then you probably do have an agenda. Andy Katz said Ray deserves some votes for SEC coach of the year for not finishing last with the hand he was dealt.

when you finish in 13th place in a conference- and people suggest you deserve votes for the COY- it means you really, really had it bad

I dont see how anybody couldnt be excited about Ray at this point. ****, nobody was excited by the hire. But Ray has more than proved he can coach this season. And bringing Richard Williams back into the shadows as an advisor is a great move as well.

You must've missed the part about "I'm not saying Rick Ray is the next Tom Crean..."

My comparison was to show you that a dumpster fire can be turned around quite quickly and that basketball could see better days ahead of it. Sorry for being so positive today.

Anyone who claims this years team showed more hustle and effort and that proves what a great coach Ray is pushing an agenda the same as someone who claims this season proves Ray can't coach.

Hey ... he beat out a 3-year coach or we woulda been in 14th place. I think that's pretty good compared to what we all expected. I wasn't sure we'd win a single game when the year started. He's done a lot with very little.

Tom Crean is a gigantic douchebag. Not that that's relevant to anything in this thread, but I would love to see some nobody hit a Bryce Drew shot on his *** in the 1st round.

ummmm- no. Not just that.

It's having an actual strength program now
It's having gone thru a year of no twitter drama
It's exciting to see a team with heart

Plus this: Remember last year Bost talking about how they didnt watch film? The Stansbury Sheep defended it saying the players didnt need to watch film- that was for the coaches to do. Well, today we have this quote from the coaches teleconference:

"All of them have done a great job of continuing to come in, work, watch film, get better on a daily basis."

Just hearing that said about our players is a huge improvement and shows how much better the staff handles things.

Anybody that cant see the improvements we are making in basketball just dont want to see them

so what? We had half the scholarship players everybody else had- and everybody on the court was a 1st year D-1 player for the most part.

Which is not bad with what we've had to deal with this year. We would have struggled to begin with just because of the state Stansbury left the program in. Then throw in 4 ACLs and a broken wrist, and that's about the best we could have hoped for.

I'll be the first to say that Ray still has a LOT to prove. But he's done about all that anyone could have reasonably expected this season.

You're really killing your whole "I don't have an agenda" claim. We didn't have a player on our roster who should have been an SEC starter this year and played most of the season with only 6 scholarhip players. What the hell else did you expect the stats to look like? And yet, we still managed to win 4 SEC games and tie for 12th in the league.

Did you think the stats would be good but the team would suck? Those go hand in hand, what is your point? Rebounds may be hustle plays...but it also helps to have a guy over 6'8. You would think a team with stats THAT bad, wouldn't have won 4 games in a major conference.

I'm just not sugar coating that this was the worst MSU basketball team I can remember. Ray had choices. His practices lead to some of the injuries, he let gray go etc. Our recruiting for next year looks like **** so what makes you think it will be any better?

Comparing this year's team to Sidney's team is not pushing an...

agenda only making a comparison. Also, no one said Ray is a great coach, but I like what I've seen so far:

1. Hustle and effort out of young guys.
2. Respect for the coach and university.
3. Winning at the end of the season when no one expects it.
4. All of these are promising attributes that I believe will make for a successful program, and I also love the fact that Richard Williams will be involved.

Nobody's ever said this isn't the worst MSU basketball team since at least Richard Williams's first team. We all agree on that. But there's nothing Ray could have done this year to have made it any better than he did. By all rights, we should have been even worse this year. I agree with you about recruiting. He's got to recruit good players, and so far I'm not overwhelmed with the commitments for next year. But we will be MUCH improved over this year just from getting the injured players back and bringing in a few mediocre recruits. You can't deny the raging dumpster inferno Stansbury left us with.

1. Practice injuries are bad luck. Some of you try to make it sound like Ray had pregnant women doing belly flops
2. Ray didnt make the players smoke weed and fail tests- he inherited that
3. He didnt "let" Gray go. He just informed Gray there would be no more "love" as Gray put it.
4. He signed a juco for some needed height. He signed a PG that chose us over Bama
5. We had an entire team of inexperience. That almost never happens in college basketball. Our 2 returning guys with experience both missed half the season or more.

Next year we will be much improved due to experience and health- plus much better coaching than we have seen in over a decade

Just curious, where does this idea Richard Williams is helping Rick Ray come from? We talked to him recently and he was less than flattering of our basketball situation. Was just wondering?

coach K would have struggled to find 10 Ws with our roster.

ray hasn't convinced me he's the man for the long haul, but he also hasn't shown me that we hired the wrong man for the job. yes the hire was underwhelming, but that's all it was, a hiring, and the act of hiring him has no bearing on his coaching ability. his coaching deserves to be judged separately from how much excitement, or lack thereof, his hiring brought to the program. i saw some positives this year (hustle, hard work, different offensive sets, defensive variety), and that's enough to have me cautiosly hopeful moving forward with more seasoning on guys like ware, thomas, and sword and a full roster of scholarship worthy players. i am a bit concerned about cruitin', but i'll hold off on making a final judgment for now until i see how our signees look on the floor and fit in ray's system.

This kind of talk wears me out. To judge Ray based on what he's had to work with is bullsh*t. Think any coach could have taken that talent and done more? When he does recruit well (and he will) and starts winning (and he will) this kind of unfair judgmental sh*t will be the reason he jumps to another school after we finish second behind Kentucky in 2 years and get at least 2 games deep into the NCAA tournament. But unless he 17s the recruiting this year and loses over half his games next year, I'm giving the guy a chance. I mean Freezus had a sh*t year by SEC standards (6-6) when he took over that train wreck and the bears treat him like a god. Can't we just crack Ray a beer and say 'Hey coach--you've got them hustling again" and let a least a couple of seasons play out before he has to carry a completely depleted team AND his fan base on his back?

Richard and Rick sat together while at the Coliseum watching the championship games. They have been communicating

Crean is also married to Jim and John Harbaugh's sister. Talk about a coaching family.
