SALISBURY - Kannapolis City Schools officials say that the student population at A.L. Brown High School is expected to exceed 2,000 by 2027, growth that the school is not currently equipped to support.

To help solve that problem, the system is seeking approximately $81 million in funding from the state, Rowan County and Cabarrus County to demolish Cannon Gym and build new classrooms, administrative offices and a cafeteria in the space.

The school system is applying for $62 million from the N.C. Department of Instruction's Needs-Based Public School Capital Fund Grant, which is the maximum. The grant requires a 15-percent match, which would be provided by Cabarrus and Rowan counties, proportional to the student population at A.L.

Brown that comes from each county.

Cabarrus would contribute approximately $14.9 million, or 75 percent, while Rowan would contribute approximately $5 million.

Not trying to be a SA, but why would these counties pay AL Brown, can’t these kids go to school in their county or am I missing something?

Rocky Mount High School is located firmly in Nash County. But the city of Rocky Mount itself straddles both Nash and Edgecombe Counties. Because of this, a whole bunch of students that lived in the Edgecombe side of Rocky Mount attended Rocky Mount High School in Nash County. Edgecombe County was paying Nash County for those students' education. Edgecombe County did get those Edgecombe County students back this year though. So yeah, one county paying another does happen.

I remember not long ago there was talk of ALB being taken over by CCS. Not sure how accurate that is.

I don’t think that’s happening now, because there are schools in the school system that are in both counties.
