sports revenue that State. Said he heard this on Memphis talk radio last week. Initially, I said there is no way. But I know Nike signed a big deal with Memphis when Cal was still the coach. I wondered if perhaps that was included but the ESPN deal was not included for us? Either way, it's hard to see a way Memphis has more sports revenue than State mainly because of the seperation in football and conference affiliation.

I've checked the NCAA site and the Sports Business journal site but all I can find is the top 20 schools.

He said Memphis was 69 on the list, State was 78.

Memphis was Top 10 in basketball only - Louisville is the current No. 1 and they are similar schools.

http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_college/2009/07/how-much-revenue-did-your-favorite-fbs-school-take-in-in-200708-this-chart-will-tell-you.html
The chart in this blog entry ranks all Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-A) schools by the total revenue they took in during the 2007-08 reporting year. These revenues include generated revenue (such as proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorships) and allocated revenue (such as tuition waivers, money from student fees and direct institutional support.)
We're 75th, tucked in between the Air Force Academy and East Carolina.

hard to believe. Basketball is huge there, but that would be before the ESPN deal for the SEC. Should be interesting to see a new report next year.

The consensus seems to be that that athletic dept doesn't have to actually pay tuition to the school for its scholarship players like at most schools. Those tuition waivers are counted as revenue for their athletic dept. Since tuition at Vandy is pretty damn high, that adds up to a pretty good bit of money. I have no idea if that's right or not, but it seems reasonable. BTW, I know Vandy doesn't technically have an athletic dept. any more, but I don't know the name of the dept. that athletics is part of.

that this list is probably cooked. If you break down the specifics many of these schools would move all over the place.

These lists are hard to compare (how do you count donations? How do you count scholarship money, etc.). I am confident that Memphis athletic money does not compare to MSU.

I can give Memphis the benefit of the doubt because of their recent surge in basketball, but we're behind them, Houston, and SMU? There's just no way. Not with conference payouts, tv deals, and sponsorships.

My only guess is that Bulldog Club donations are not included in this number.

I give $5K per year and am barely in the Top 20% of members. If you were to only count the top 20% and pretend that they all only gave $5K per year, that's $7.5M. Throw in another $12M for season tickets(thanks women's bball for your $25K), and then add $10M for the SEC deal, you're already pushing $30M. I'd love to see a breakdown, but I'd to believe that MSU is really around $45M with Bulldog Club donations.

simply because of the sheer number of people that were on season ticket protest trying to get rid of Crxxms. MSU isn't supposed to be that good this year and season ticket sales have risen substantially from the past couple of years.
