They are asking the local government to donate $38 million. Couldn't they just do $375 million in upgrades and not ask the tax payers for more money? I love college football, but at some point I think you have to ask when is it enough. They are talking about $425 million to add 10,000 seats and update an old stadium. Even if I think it is a bit over the top, private money is private money. But I don't see any need for any public money to be used for this.

Personally though I think all college athletic programs should be funded without tax dollars.

That said, where are the renderings...for $425 million I want to see at least some pictures.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't we using public funds in the form of revenue bonds to finance our expansion? The debt is secured by the lease of the facilities from MSU to the IHL. If for some reason we couldn't make the payments, the public (IHL) is on the hook.

Seems like a brand new stadium could be built for that amount of money. The new domed stadium in Dallas was something under $2B, and the NY Nets arena is around $1B. Surely they could just build a new 100,000 seat stadium on a different site and still use Kyle while the new one is being built.

They didn't say where home games might be moved to, and I really can't imagine. I wouldn't think Austin, and Dallas and Houston are quite a ways away. I guess there's San Antonio. But I'm a firm believer in home games being played on campus. They could ask us what a mess it was when we played most of our games in Jackson (and Ole Miss did too).

They must really be excited to be in the SEC!

Do you not think that the local economy will be stimulated way beyond an additional $38 million over the life of Kyle field with these additional seats and upgrades?? Shouldn't the local economy have some skin in the game as well?? I don't think it is too much to ask at all. I'll bet that if A&M proposed demoing Kyle field and building a $450 million in a neighboring county/city, the locals would very quickly see that the $38 million is a pretty good investment. Gotta give some to get some!

This argument gets used a lot by sports teams, and they do bring in additional tax revenue to the city. But $38 million is alot of tax revenue to bring in to break even. And as a percentage of the overall bill, it is not a high percentage. I just think it should all be privately funded. I understand why some people feel differently.

I think we are. Can't say I totally agree with it either, but at least they didn't get ask for a straight contribution.

The reason it gets used a lot by sports teams is because it is a viable argument. For example, the 2010 Franklin American Music City Bowl (just this one game) was estimated to have a $20.1 million impact on the local Nashville economy in 2010. Granted, we are talking about different cities with different parameters but the argument still holds water......the expansion will lead to a significant increase in the local economy...how much that is...we'll leave that for the economists on this board.

Looks like they intend to be a serious player in the SEC and know what it`s gonna take.

At A&M, the "Zone" the huge endzone seating that was built a few years ago is nice. However, the side stands are very out of date underneath, and about like West side underneath as far as concessions. Seats on the sideline sides are very tight and old looking.
However, A&M tickets are already the highest in the SEC I believe. I'm sure they will probably up the price to help pay for some of this. I know the aggies have money, but I know a lot of aggies that can't afford the season tickets. Their required donations make ours look cheap.

Revenue bonds aren't public money. Revenue bonds are not guaranteed by anything other than the revenues the project generates. If the project fails, the bondholders don't get paid.

There's no way in hell the public will get that $38M back. Even if A&M doesn't get that $38M, they're still going to do a major upgrade to Kyle Field. So the public will get the benefit with or without kicking in $38M. Hell, the current stadium holds 90,000, so they're really not talking about adding that much in capacity.

They currently have well beyond actual capacity at games. The true capacity of Kyle Field is 82,589 so they are looking at adding roughly 20,000 seats.

Essentially what they are doing IS building a brand new stadium. They are just doing it in stages over multiple years to allow games to continue to be watched there without any drastic reduction in capacity. This will be similar to what we are doing, only to a much, much more massive scale.

They are nearing 55,000 students. Their number of living alumni is increasing incredibly quickly now. They've got billions and billions of new dollars coming into College Station now with the federal grant to basically become the central CDC. They've got new med and law schools.

A&M is going to be a SERIOUS player. Everyone should have known that when we let them in. Once they made the decision to break up with Texas, all bets were off. They've got EVERY natural recruiting advantage of schools like Florida and LSU, with literally 10x the money. God forbid they actually start winning games.

I don't have a problem with them asking for some extra tax $$ from College Station. This will bring a whole lot more money into town than $38 million over time. How many businesses there already thrive JUST BECAUSE of A&M football? They didn't pay a dime on Kyle Field the first time. They shouldn't mind throwing in a piece of the pie. Besides, I get the impression many here are looking at College Station as if it were Starkville, Ms being asked to foot the bill for $38 million, when in fact you are looking at 232,000 people vs 22,000 people. It works out to about $163.80 per person, if payable over $15 years, the public gets taxed about $11/yr.

I agree that A&M is going to be a serious player in the SEC and nationally. That's why they were brought in. Missouri will be too. Not as much as A&M over the long haul, but their basketball brings the SEC up immediately and they're a solid football school that is going to get better. The SEC wouldn't have added anybody if they weren't going to bring a lot to the table. My only point is that they're going to expand and renovate Kyle Field with or without the $38M of public money. The local economy is giong to get the benefit either way.

Welcome to a Democratic Republic. That's the beauty of America. You vote for someone to represent you and if they do thing you don't like you vote them out. However we are talking about the State of Texas and football. Hell they high school stadiums that will make some college stadiums look cheap. This will probably win more votes for politicians over there. Now that they are in the SEC and you will have Alabama and LSU coming in every other year and many other teams coming it will pay off for the city in the long run.<O:p</O:p
