ready to have torbush drawn and quartered. your d seems to me to now be playing very well. how do you feel about torbush now? is he doing a good job and it just took some time or is the d playing well in spite of him. realizing he struggled at tx a&m, i've still always thought he was a good dcoor. he did a great job at ole miss back in the 90's.

but he did have 2 "what the hell were you thinking?" games early in the season against Auburn and GaTech. Getting some new guys into the secondary, White and McPhee adjusting to SEC play, and Chaney getting back up to speed has made our defense decent.

Hopefully he continues to scheme well and getting players in position to make plays

...in the secondary really helps. We were sitting ducks with what we had back there. We have three new faces now with a lot more speed, with a Juco who just got off probation, a Redshirt Freshman, and a True Freshman. Johnthan Banks is something special. He makes a DC look like a genius just for putting him in. Seriously, it takes good athletes. Combined with the young secondary, 5 of our 2 deep defensive linemen are either RFr. or Fr. It is midseason, so they have gotten a lot of valuable experience.

It's not how I feel about Torbush..it's how I feel about Mullen. I'm fairly certain Mullen had a strongly worded conversation with him after Auburn and required him to bring the heat and let the chips fall where they may. We are definitely blitzingmore. From what I've heard, Mullen feels like with our lack of depth and inexperience in the defensive backfield, our best option is to pressure the quarterback and force him to make bad choices or hurried passes. Looks like that worked pretty well Saturday.

Edited to change "ate his *** out" to "had a strongly worded conversation" per BBD and Der

Seems like he's improved as the season goes on. Maybe getting out of the press box helped. We'll see how the D does against passing teams like Arkansas and Ole Miss.

We thankfully ditched the 3 man front against UF, for the most part.

It was really just the AU game where the gameplan was horrible.

...when is the last time a true freshman, any true freshman for any team, had 4 interceptions, 3 for touchdowns in just 2 games?

That's gross.

Seriously though, we now have guys in place that can keep up with recievers, close quickly, and (see here: Banks and Brumfield) not be waayyyyyy behind when they're making a play on the ball. I like that Torbush has made and continues to make adjustments, but I do think that he was basically given an ultimatum by Mullen after the Auburn debacle. So I guess I give the credit to both of them. I do agree though, our secondary's going to be tested big time in Little Rock.

ETA: Apparently I'm way behind on the *** jokes.

Then I like what he's doing and would like to have him back.

I think it was a combination of him moving down from the box (communication was evidently an issue when he was in the box), Mullen laying down the law on what our philosophy should be (more aggressive than we had been), and the additions of Banks, Broomfield, and Langston in the secondary.

Hey, maybe lightning will strike and we'll see similar and sudden improvement in our passing game.

"but I do think that he was basically given an ultimatum by Mullen after the Auburn debacle."

I believe Mullen told Torbush that he doesn't want to see a 3 man rush anymore. And we haven't seen it since.

Especially without knowing exactly what happened against Auburn and GA Tech. Maybe we just picked the wrong gameplan. Maybe the coaches didn't yet understand where all the players were with strengths and weaknesses. Maybe it was in-game communication not being real clear. Beats me. Lack of adjustments in those games was disturbing.

I do feel better about him now than I did a few weeks ago for sure.

We played it some in the Florida game too, for the poster above that said we didn't. You just don't notice it when it does ok.

I think the biggest difference Saturday was getting Wade Bonner off the field. I never really could figure out who we were playing in his place. I guess Marcus Washington. That worked well. Washington's skills are perfectly suited for that position. Having Bonner out there was like playing defense with 10 players.

This is something we have not seen at Mississippi State in years. Our D is playing solid now and it's because he looked at what went wrong and fixed it. Although we were upset after a few games, nobody expected him to be perfect this year. All you can ask for is a coach to realize what he did wrong and get his staff on board to correct it. My take.....

we don't see anymore inexcusable bull like the Auburn game, I'm fine with him. I wanted him gone because I thought that he probably would not adjust or know how to. Scars from the Croom era, I guess.

I do credit Mullen for forcing to him to start shitting or get off the pot.
