Nah bruh

Beating the Peds would do wonders for the perception of the program

No it wouldn't.
Literally nobody (outside this board) would care 3 weeks later.
"One win" doesn't have nearly the impact fans make it out to have.

We start next year 1-2 and nobody will care "but we beat PSU last year).

Indiana beat both PSU and Michigan in 2020.
How did that work for their perception?

This actually happened just this morning. I had a talk with my son about why I hate Penn State and why he should hate Penn State, too. It is a conversation that every father should have with every son well before they start thinking about college applications. It's not just about the pedophilia or the cover up or the cult of Joe or twisted priorities. Those are manifestations of larger issue. We hate them because of who they are at their core.

Respectfully DISAGREE

My bro coaches HS FB in NJ.
He has told me players notice and talk especially the ones being recruited by P5

I would rather beat osu in two weeks. That game will have some eyes on it. When psu loses to um on Nov 11 their season will be over a d no one will care outside of our board. Beating an unbeaten osu will grab attention.

I went with 2 wins.

8 wins on the season is just something I thought was completely out of the realm of realistic expectations.

Was actually thinking of starting a thread about the now legit possibility of getting to 8 wins.

And of course, potentially getting to 9 with a bowl win, but don't want to get too far ahead of myself.

Well- that sort of doesn't answer the question. And why it wasn't posed in the question.

They beat Wisconsin too, 6-1 in the reg season before 2 cancelled games late.

Lost to Ole Miss in their bowl game to finish 6-2.

So having a good record didn't have much carry over either.

So squeaking by Iowa, who lost at home to Minny, and Maryland who lost at home to Illinois, then getting plastered at Pen St is better than going to PA and beating them there?

Thought of putting OSU in the mix but for me that would rank behind the two options included for the poll

So losing to Iowa (who lost at home to Minny), squeaking by PSU and then losing to Maryland (who lost at home to Illinois) to end the regular season is better than finishing 8-4 and ending the season with a win over direct peer Maryland?

I think the question really comes down to recruiting.

And does beating a high end opponent like PSU help us land high end recruits moreso then 8 wins without that high profile win?

Given how often we are(were? I don't follow too closely) in comp with PSU, and the other conf giants, for high end NJ recruits, it might.

And then immediately lose to Maryland (who lost at home to Illinois)?
Quite the letdown. All that great talk will be quickly over.
Maryland, despite the loss to Illi, is pretty good though, both of us could be playing for win 8 in that game.

I would factor in though that Maryland is at home so if we are looking for a signature home win, in front of a good crowd, that's our best bet. Would put us in a good mindset as we go into bowl preparation.

Agree with the PSU win

It would make a bigger statement

7-5 with a win over PSU has more lasting impact than 8-4 with no signature wins

Plus giving Penn State a second loss (with the second being an unranked team) would totally TANK THEIR SEASON…. And that would be highly HIGHLY satisfying

Penn state definitely

If you give me the choice 5-7 and not beating Penn state or 1-11 and beating Penn state , I take the latter

Funny how when discussing Wimsatt passing its all "doesn't matter how it happened. Just matters that we won 6 wins is 6 wins."

But then here actually getting more wins doesn't matter.
"I'd rather have more losses as.long as we beat one particular team that is inordinately important to me."

This.

I’d repost the poll with beating OSU instead of PSU. Sign me up for OSU on 11/4. That would be a bigger win than beating Louisville in 2006 (if they beat Wisconsin next week of course).

I prefer the two victories. If we beat Penn State and lose the other games, we'll get no credit, including with bowl inviters. Instead the narrative will be, "look how lousy Penn State is. They got beaten by Rutgers, which is so bad it couldn't beat weak Iowa and Maryland teams." If we beat Iowa and Maryland, the story will be, "see how Rutgers is on the rise. Yes, they're not ready to beat Penn State, but they beat the teams they should have."

PSU plays Michigan on 11/11...If they lose to UM and have 2 loses will losing to RU have a greater impact for them or his it mostly fans wanted to beat them?
RU wining on 11/11 vs Iowa and then last game of season vs MD would be my preference..ie 2 wins vs 1...

I would like to beat Iowa and Maryland because being able to beat those teams is the next step in being a decent BIG team.

League competition is only getting tougher with the 4 PAC teams coming in. If we want to be good & not a doormat, we are gonna need to start winning some games against the top teams in NCAA. We have 7or 8 teams that could be consistently & have that pedigree to be in the top 15 most years

Minnesota had 8 wins last year and went to pinstink.

It’d be a way different path to 8 wins though. Minny plays in the west and finished behind or tied with 3 other west teams in the unbalanced BIG standings. Their crossovers were 5-7 Michigan State, 4-8 Rutgers and PSU.

If we could hand pick 2 more wins, I think I’d choose to go undefeated from home. Get the big OSU win and then close out the season at home on a high note vs. Maryland.
