Saw this question on a Tulane board. In my mind there is only one logical answer but opinion there seems to be somewhat divided (just based on the first few votes)... Curious if there is an argument I am missing that could be made for the other side. The question, edit to pertain to State, is essentially...

this question isn't specifically meant to apply to this year. It's more of a philosophical question that could apply to any season.

I hate UM as much as, if not more than, the next guy. But I'd rather us at least break .500 with a chance for a winning season. Not to mention bowl game money, TV time, etc. that are all involved with going bowling.

of enjoying the misery of others more than than your own success. I love watching Ole Miss lose as much as the next guy, but they could be the second best team in the entire country for all I care as long as we're #1.

You would probably see the same numbers in the opposite columns. Ole Miss heading to Atlanta and possibly the Sugar Bowl or NC game would have hurt our recruiting. Now that Ole Miss is falling behind in their SEC schedule, we're less concerned about them. I'd much rather see us fall to them but still go to a bowl game. It would mean both teams had average to good years.

Mississippi could win the West/SEC/ and NC and I would be OK with it as long as they had one loss in Vegas this year...we coulda been 2-10 and we would have all said "Yeah, they won, but on THAT day they weren't number one!" Don't get me wrong, I would rather they suck and us not, but like was stated above, if we are the best team in the country, I could care less is they are #2 or #120.

would be if our win against them kept them out of the SEC title game and/or a BCS bowl game. Otherwise, it's not even close.</p>

Only if that win against ole miss makes them 5-7 and they don't go to a bowl game would be the only way I would take that option.

And I will get into the semantics.

Option A likely means that we would have wins over MTSU, likely UK or an upset, and a win over Ole Miss. The only exciting thing to me there would be we beat Ole Miss and showed improvement as the season went along.

Option B means that we would likely have wins over MTSU, UK, a huge upset win over Bama or UF, and a win over a good Arkansas team in Little Rock. To me, that would show likely improvement, depending on what happened in the Egg Bowl- a loss to Ole Miss in this scenario likely meant that we reverted to our old ways of fumbling and Snead burning the secondary several times. It also could mean that Arkansas took our team out like they did in 2000 when we had people dropping like flies all over the place. But, nonetheless the huge upset win+ a bowl appearance with all of the perks that go along with it are the logical answer in this case for the long term of our program.
