About the new commitment...

i'm sick of this.....i thought mullen was going to be different....we cant afford to throw away scholorships here and still think we will be competitive week end and week out in our conference...we have a hard enough time as it is..........
someone tell me how this kid deserves this? or that this is fair?

Mullen has my blessing by pulling Hollingsworth's scholly (didn't actually pull...just offered a grey shirt). The kid is a joke....and with his experience with elite quarterbacks I'm glad he saw that he couldn't play and made Rocky go tell him the news..since it was Rocky doing a favor for Hollingworth's uncle anyway. -Btw, Gene...you need to get hooked on phonics..hence your spelling of "scholorshiop." I don't know whether this guy will pan out or not against increased competition, but I know he is a good football player. In the end, he will cost us 1/2 scholarship to take a look.
There is a fine line between athletics and academics. This kid will walk the line and make all happy he's a Bulldog in time. Whether he is a major or minor contributor is irrelevant. Sometimes as a coach you must make a choice in making a few folks happy and this is one of those in our favor. He was a first team selection at the Tupelo combine as a TE. He is athletic enough on either side of the ball to be an asset in some capacity. I'll confirm that Ole Miss wanted him as a TE.
This could be one of those "announcements" and the guy is actually walking on. If this guy is smart enough to get into Harvard, and since his Dad is high up in the athletic dept., I bet we can find a way to get him on the team without burning a scholarship.
Personally, I have nothing wrong with good will towards our own alumni. EVERY school does this. How many players has Ole Miss had " whose Dad played with Archie?" And how many players have they had related to Barney Poole and Charley Conerly? It's not just Ole Miss, look at Bama. They have a ton of guys whos Dad played for the Bear, or heck their Mom was a cheerleader.
Looking at McKenzie, it's not like he's a 5'10" 150 pound DE. He's 6'3" and he's listed at 230. He could legitimately develop into a solid player at a couple of positions. A guy like Hollingsworth was listed at something like 5'11" 180 at QB. That's a big difference to me. If Hollingsworth came, he would be continuing our tradition of lollipop guild QB's.
Also think about this- remember when we wouldn't let John Grisham's kid on the baseball team? Well, he ends up at Virginia, and now they are getting the benefit. Sometimes not bringing in a legacy can end up biting you in the ***.

I met him in the MClub at the Arkansas Game, and he drawfed me, and I'm 6'0. Jonathan is a big strong physical guy with a lot of talent and will provide leadership and will contribute to the team. I couldn't believe he was still in high school, he looked like he was about 24. He has a large frame and can easily put on 20-30 pounds of muscle.
My brother has been the head coach at Hillcrest for 3 years and also coached McKenzie at SA in Jr. High. I spoke to him last night and he called Joanathan a "Monster."

that a QB`s best friend(other than his O line) is a smart TE with good hands and size that knows how to get open. You guys critsizing this one are jumping the gun.

He has excellent speed from the tight end position and great hands. He did not receive serious interest from other schools because (1) he plays for Starkville Academy and (2) his father was a fine receiver for State when Tyler was coach and has been employed at State all of his adult life. Most major colleges know where his heart is and that it would have been a waste of time to recruit him. If he were my son I would have sent him to Princeton or Yale where he could have received a significant academic scholarship (in lieu of an athletic scholarship). He went with his heart instead of his head and chose State--and what thanks does he get--critcism from ignorants like you. He will be a significant contributor to our football team and will make you eat your words before he leaves MSU.

He was a very good student, but he never would've gotten into Harvard if he wasn't a big time football player, and yes he did get scholarship money as well. I'm not sure if it was a full ride or not, but it was something.

Doesnt hurt at all to have someone in the lockerroom who will likely be a good leader. Not a glamorous recruit, but could end up being a solid player for us before all is said and done. Glad to have him aboard!!! Welcome to MSU Johnathan!!!
Good frame and strength to grow into a college standout. What else do you need to think this is a good commit? I honestly think some of you guys would second guess Jesus.
I must have missed when they quit keeping score. Does everyone just get particpation trophies now?

I can assure you Ole Miss was not trying to sign him. Now, he may have gotten a form letter like 1500 or so do, but he's never been on their radar.
That's not knocking him, he could turn out great. If nothing else, all teams need some quality players like him that excel on and off the field. Otherwise, you've got problems that can't be cured.
