Forgive the question especially if its been addressed previously.

I have seen so much about AAU colleges since last week. What would it take for MSU to obtain something like this? I'm sure its nothing but a lot of "red tape" and bureaucracy but if Iowa State can do it Miss State can!!

On the one hand, it would seem as though if Iowa State meets the academic requirements, so would we. On the other, generally similar schools nearby us such as om, Arkansas, Auburn, Alabama, and LSU aren't in it either.

We aren't close to any of those academically.

The obvious answer would be our student profile isn't good enough. We have a high acceptance rate, which means we have a wide distribution of abilities within the student body. On the other hand, Iowa State, as somebody pointed out, is in there, and their acceptance rate is over 90%, so likely they're student profile isn't that far from ours. However, in things like 6 year graduation rate average SAT, etc. they are quite a bit ahead. Quality of the professorate would be probably the biggest influence on these rankings, as measured primarily by number of grants and publications in top tier journals. State has benefited like other schools with the retirement of the boomer generation, and subsequent recruitment of younger, hungry faculty who are competitive in grants and pubs, but B10 schools have had a huge head start in that area, and will often buy promising professors from other schools that impact these rankings. There's been a good bit of discussion on this board about the challenges for our coaches to recruit athletes to a smaller city in Mississippi - same goes for faculty.

Not sure if it's necessary, but the easiest thing State could do to improve it's rankings is stop admitting people who don't appear to belong in college. THis would probably help with retention and 6 year graduation rates if I had to guess. Even ignoring Ayers decision, that would be tough to do politically. And maybe economically. Not sure how many students we need now to make finances work.

It would take intense focus and directing unlimited resources to the effort to get Mississippi State a look from the AAU in 50 years. We are the third lowest rated Power 5 school, ahead only of West Virginia and Texas Tech.

There are only 66 AAU schools. Florida, Mizzou, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt are the only members from the SEC. Mizzou is the lowest ranked AAU school.

The fact that 13 out of 14 of the Big Ten are members is incredible. And Nebraska, the 14th, was a member when they were added, and one of the reasons Nebraska lost it is because the AAU changed its metrics to disregard USDA Agricultural Research, which is pretty big at MSU. Without a medical school and ag research not counting, MSU would have a hard time with this.

The entire Ivy League was not AAU until Dartmouth joined in 2019.

Kansas and Iowa State are AAU members and the Big Ten would be right to add them. Iowa State is the only university with a DOE research facility. They are putting out Nobel Prize winners in Ames.

North Carolina State is intensely trying to become the next member. Duke and UNC are both members. One of the requirements for application is R1 designation. We lost it but we got it back. That list is only 131 schools, so its a big deal. All 14 SEC schools are members. It was 13/14 when we were kicked out for a couple years. Should have cost several people their jobs but we were winning in football at the time so it didn't.

Even Notre Dame is not in it.

Still not sure why the B1G hasn't plucked some variation of Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Duke or Virginia yet.

Add those, Kansas and Iowa State and they are now the B2G.

I found the problem riiiiiiight here. When you can’t be as selective with admitting and your general pool of applicants isn’t as academically prepared for a 4-year school, what do you expect the problem to be. It’s more of an indictment on MS’s educational system than MSU.

I wouldn't frame it as admitting lower capability students just to pay bills. MSU has taken on more bills in order to be able to serve lower capability students it is required to admit. If all the sudden MSU was free to be more selective, you can't just ignore the fact that it has taken on liabilities that don't just go away if they now start denying admission to those students.
