Academic standards between USM and Mstate

I need someone to figure this out. We always talk about USM having lower academic standards but does anyone really know that for sure? I have had the same argument with one of my Southern Miss friends multiple times. Finally after another debate last night, he sent me these links. Can anyone give me a definitive answer?

Its not a school vs school thing. CUSA has lower acceptance standards than the SEC. As for what it takes to qualify, I'm not sure.

The Universities can't make it any easier but they can choose to have tougher ones, like Stanford, Vandy and Notre Dame. The SEC has a higher requirement. Hell even some of the SEC schools set higher requirements then what the SEC sets. I believe that's how we got Channey from Georgia. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>This only applies if they are going to play sports.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span> Other then that the Universities can set any requirements they want.</p>

Something like 18 ACT with 2.5 highschool gpa. This is just the bottom requirements to even be able to apply. You can be rejected on these criteria. The sticking point with athletics is the requirements of the SEC along with the NCAA. The SEC made it tougher to get in several years ago after Jackie started kicking *** with less than stellar student athletes. That is when the Juco rules came into play but they might have done some things to the highschool requirements also.

They used the NCAA minimum standards and the SEC used a higher standard. THAT CHANGED A YEAR AGO. The SEC now uses the NCAA standard. MSU and USM essentially have the same academic standards for athletes now.

to come off as such a d*ck on every single post of yours. I PMed Rosebowl and got into a long email discussion with him about this last year. what it finally came down to was he was claiming the one math class thing. obviously, he's been wrong plenty of times before but he did email me an excerpt from the SEC bylaws. i don't have the email anymore, thus no linky, but you're saying they changed it anyway so you're probably right. you seem knowledgeable even though you're a prick.

MSU is ahead of USM and that's not just in the report you list. The Center for Measuring University Performance tier rankings are based off of research grants, funding, endowments, doctoral graduates, postdocs, etc. In terms of overall research prestige and rankings, MSU is a higher tier than USM. In terms of getting extramural funding, this is extremely important. The USN&WR factors in these rankings with some other factors to make their own rankings.

I guess it all comes down to which of the two points you are trying to argue...undergraduate admission standards or research/prestige standards. Typically, schools that are higher on the research tier side tend to have higher academic admission standards as well. That's not always the case though.

I can tell you, because I have attended both schools, that the academic standards (across the board) at USM are much, much, much lower than they are at State. I took courses at a CC in the summer a few years ago, and many of the classes I have taken at USM are comparable to those. There are several athletes in my major and they are definitely held to a very low standard. Classes at USM are a total joke and I am all but ashamed to even hold a degree from there. Had MSU carried my intended major I NEVER would have left.

Jerrell Powe is playing at Ole Miss, and he's not exactly a Rhodes Scholar. The academic requirements are the same in the SEC as they are in C-USA.

I have a degree from both USM and State. The academics are comparable.

I think I remember Auburn and USM being on probation as far as their SACS (or whatever organization) accreditation was concerned. No clue, just guessing they could have confused the accreditation issue with the rankings.

I agree that it would depend on what you are taking. The business schools are comparable. I would think that State's Engineering school would be better than USM, but USM would be better in Polymer Science... Saying one school is superior to the other is like Ole Miss calling themselves "The Ivy League of the South".

I didn't get an elaboration on the subject. Just that statement. I will find out the specifics the next time I run into him. By the way, besides this guy's main job which I won't mention because it may give away who he is, he is also one of the people that verifies academic compliance for our athletes so I trust what he is saying.

Per MW at BDJ:

Many of you have wondered why some kids get in and some go to other schools due to grade... much like what happened yesterday.

The way it has been explained to me is that you have to have a 2.0 in the English and Math classes that can transfer to an SEC school. It is not a MSU issue... the SEC requires this of all JC transfers. C-USA doesn't have the same rule.

I think it is two classes... so a B and a D average to a C or a 2.0.

So you must have at least a 2.0 in English and a 2.0 in Math to make the move to an SEC school.

No it's not new. Engineering degrees are awarded by the College of Science and Technology at USM.</p>

They think they have an Architecture program too. Let's just say that there is a vast difference between an Engineering or Architecture degree from USM and one from MSU.

To steal a phrase from someone's signature, the difference between an engineering degree and an engineering technology degree is like the difference between lightning and lightning bug.

USM offers BS degrees in engineering technology and architecture technology. They do not offer BS degrees in engineering or architecture.

engineering technology degrees while State offers engineering degrees. I don't know the difference between engineering and engineering technology, and I don't care. I wasn't an engineering major. Like I said before, if I wanted a degree in Engineering I would go to State. If I wanted a degree in Polymer Science, I would go to USM. It's what each school specializes in. As far as business degrees are concerned, they're comparable. All in all, I think they're both good schools.

provide "support" to a person with a professional degree in engineering, a degree that would be obtained from Mississippi State or Georgia Tech or any other renowned engineering college or university. It's much like a nurse's aide provides support to a registered nurse. Now the picture becomes clear about that degree from Southern. As far as polymer science, doesn't that have something to do with "plastic"???

the degrees are worth crap. I can attest to the fact that many of my community college courses were much more demanding and tougher than classes at USM. That's just me though. Business school is good, though.

I did at State, but my core courses were at Hinds, and I majored in business at State....did not think much of the business school at State. My professors at Hinds seemed more interested in teaching and taking a personal interest than at State. Of course, it was a smaller, more controlled environment. The community college system in this state is probably one of best bargains around as far as education is concerned.
