We can (or could) all take pride in our growth accomplishments across many sports including football. And I reflect back on Jurich copping the old Avis rental car slogan “we try harder.”
That is/was a statement made in the present tense. It wasn’t Jurich and U of L similarly reflecting back on what they had accomplished. The statement wasn’t “we tried harder” as if we/they had arrived and didn’t need to do more.
Staying on the rise—on Doc Ramsey’s upward “trajectory”—was and remains a process. It doesn’t allow you to scan your horizon and say “mission accomplished.” As soon as that creeps in, you start regressing. We don’t do anything but struggle to maintain the status quo in just about everything: money, attendance, facilities, whatever. That’s trying to survive, not trying harder…
