my coworker swears the ACC is going to be a stronger conference top to bottom in football this year. I think he may have a point. Obviously the best team is Bama, but beyond that there are real question marks all over the SEC.

Florida has unproven D and new QB
I have no faith in Les Miles/LSU's QB
Georgia? Tenn? They're both going to be down..
Arkansas? Auburn? Maybe make a run..

Anyway, I think the SEC probably will still have an edge, but it's a slight one to say the least. Especially if you compare it to years past.

but if North Carolina beats LSU in Week 1 , the talking heads will begin the debate all season long. VA Tech , Georgia Tech, North Carolina will be good - and if Florida State and Miami could finally get it together, they could have an argument.

Miami fans are confident that they're going into the Horseshoe and beating OSU the second week of the season. If that happens, and UNC beats LSU, conference comparisons will be all the rage.

North Carolina is a terrible opening game for a LSU team with questions at QB
The Heels are going to have a ridiculous Defense this year.

But I agree, I think the corndogs lose their opener and the great conference debate begins all over again

Why? They have the best QB and some very nice weapons for him to employ. If their defense is any good at all, they will be beyond tough.

But then two years ago a Georgia Tech team was 5-3 in the ACC beat UGA, the SEC's 3rd best team. Also in 08, Wake went 4-4 in ACC play but beat Ole Miss, the SEC's 3rd or 4th best team that year. Clemson has dominated South Carolina winning 6 of the last 8 in that series and they've never even sniffed the ACC title game until this past year. Hell, Duke went 1-7 in the ACC in 08 but beat Vandy, who went 4-4 in SEC play.

To me, the SEC is a little overhyped and is not as much of a runaway for top conference as people like to portray it. After Bama and UF last year, the SEC was pretty mediocre, and it will be again this year since 4 of the 6 bellcows are trending downward (UT, UGA, Auburn, LSU)

You'd probably have Bama at the top, but teams 2-8 (or 6) are gonna be 50/50, maybe even the majority coming out of the ACC.

I'd put VT and UF about even, UNC and LSU about even, then i'd give the nod to Miami and FSU over Ark and Auburn.

I think the 'rising tide' theory holds true with the SEC. A dominate team (or 2 like last year) makes the whole conference seem much stronger than it really is.

in 08. We lost to Vandy two weeks later before turning the season around. Clemson won their division in the ACC last year and got pounded by USC who then went on to get pounded by a mediocre UConn team. The LSU-UNC game will be interesting. UNC's d looks tough, but I have heard their qb play is terrible too. If we are talking about a defensive struggle, I'll take the Tigers. Clemson is one of the better football programs in the ACC and they have been to something like ten straight bowls but got raped in Atlanta by Alabama.

Edited to add ESPN picks ACC fifth to SEC's no. 1: acc vs. sec

Then add GA, FL, and SC and maybe KY and that's pretty impossible to beat. All that after the best showing at the NFL draft this year. Tell your coworker to keep his mouth shut.
