That's what I had.I wish I had only had to go to school for 6 hours growing up.

You get the pay in the end either way. So you take all the extra days at the end of 30 years. So how is it not the same thing?Being allowed to take 10 days and taking 10 days isn't the same thing.
So they do use they're sick days. SOB, who would have thought? They get sick
I dont think the problem is paying them more, I think it's we know our tax money won't reach them...the boards will swallow it all up for themselves.I've also never seen a profession where the solution to improving employee performance or hiring better employees was to pay them less.
Would be like saying Calipari is being overpaid for his performance, so lets cut his pay. What do you think that's going to accomplish?
Unless someone is tied down to a certain area for whatever reason, the best are generally going to go to where they can be paid the most. You cut their pay or don't give them raises (which is in effect a pay cut) and they're just going to eventually leave for somewhere that pays more.
Well for one, you're not getting the time off if you don't use it.You get the pay in the end either way. So you take all the extra days at the end of 30 years. So how is it not the same thing?
Planning is used to grade papers, answer emails, and to plan for the next day-week lesson plans. Usually they do a week at a time and adjust accordingly. What exactly do they do during planning? Grade papers and such? I honestly don't know. Sounds good depending on your department...whats a PE teacher do during planning, work on his J? Would probably be beneficial to have if you're an English teacher grading essays that need feedback.
Get rid of unions...I don't even know how this is a debate after the last 2 years.
Get rid of debt of education...numbers show the decline in ed since it started. Shoukd the Federal government be involved in such things? That's what's weird...teachers lose their mind if ppl want a say in education, but are completely fine with a central planner overlaying everything on them. The founders were pro education, they were not pro Federal education.
And imo, teaching has to be a calling. Priests don't complain about pay, they were "called" to do it.
Teachers have to produce lesson plans for each class every day. Where I went to school, PE teachers also taught health classes and driver's ed.What exactly do they do during planning? Grade papers and such? I honestly don't know. Sounds good depending on your department...whats a PE teacher do during planning, work on his J? I send my kids to private school right now because public schools decided to shut down last year for extended periods of time. The intent was to send them to public school, but a bunch of whiny, public school teachers made sure that wasn't an option.Hell I figured you guys over there all sent your kids to private school. If for nothing else to brag about it.
This thread is proof you don’t respect teachers. A big problem is parents want no part in supporting their kids academic progress. But you do you.I send my kids to private school right now because public schools decided to shut down last year for extended periods of time. The intent was to send them to public school, but a bunch of whiny, public school teachers made sure that wasn't an option.
This thread is proof that a lot of teachers don't really care about education. All they want is a paycheck and more vacation days.
I suppose some of the training is voluntary and if teachers have no desire to better themselves or learn new teaching strategies then they could choose to do only mandatory training required by the district. If that is the case then they would have more time off but I don't know how any KY teacher could go to Colorado for the entire summer.I'm mostly on the side of the teachers in this thread, but things like this tend to lose me.....
In Kentucky, I currently know 5-6 teachers who work full time jobs during the Summer. at a call center, as a restaurant server, doing taxes, mowing lawns, construction. I even know 1 teacher who hasn't worked during the Summer, but is a bachelor and has spent his Summer overland camping in his Jeep for 3 out of the past 5 Summers.....going all over the US.
In Tennessee, I currently know close to 10 friends/family who routinely work 30+ hrs/wk during the Summer. At the co-op, as a car mechanic, mowing lawns, running a daycare, at a Faber-Castel pencil factory, at a make-up factory, a Ranger at a National Park out in Colorado (yes, he relocates during the Summer), construction.
And a good portion of those teacher friends/family of mine that don't work say that they don't do so because they want the time off to recharge or spend with their kids.
This may be true with high school teachers as that building clears out fast but my wife and daughter who teach elementary school are both at school at least an hour after kids leave getting ready for the next day. If they don't then they have to go in early to get ready.Because lets be real.. aside from some one week training, or a few meetings here and there.. they have summer's off lol. There's no way around it.
In one breath they will tell you they don't, and in the next breath they can't wait to tell you how excited they are for the last day of school. Weird, huh? Mid June means nothing to the rest of us... but it sure means something for teachers.
In MY personal experience, no student gets out of a school faster than a teacher, whether it's for the summer or end of the day.
It's been said many times but if school starts at 8:00 that busses start dropping kids off around 7:30 so teachers have to be there when kids start coming in. They also have to stay to get kids on the bus and probably get ready for the next day so they don't leave as soon as the last bell rings. As far as lunch goes they get 20-25 minutes but usually eat with the kids so it's not like they are napping. And their planning period is usually spent meeting with a whiny parent or having PLC meetings. If it isn't then they are actually planning.I also thought that it was 180 days a year until I googled how many days are in a Kentucky school year & it showed 170 days. And as far as the 6 hours a day goes. School starts at 8:00 am & lets out at 3:00 pm. Then subtract their time off for lunch, then subtract their time off for something called a planning period when most off them do nothing. They might not even work 6 hours a day, might be more like 5 1/2 hours a day.
Yeah. Who here has not had to cancel or reschedule a vacation because of work? Out of the three months a teacher has off, we should get teary eyed because her planned vacation occurred when she had training? Wow.One whole time you had to do that? My goodness why isn't their a Lifetime movie about this?
Yeah it sounds like there are a bunch of dudes on here are jealous of the sweet gig that teachers have. You know making lots of money, working 6 hours a day doing nothing, have great benefits and all while getting nothing but love and admiration from parents, students and state leaders. Maybe you are right and they really should change careers for one of those soon to be opening jobs. For all the complaints of the lavish $38,000 a year teacher starting salary (after taking on $50,000 in student loan debt), the fact that they actually get (GASP) sick days, and once had a pension (which has now been replaced by a hybrid 401k type plan with no social security) . . . I have wonderful news! The opportunity is there for you! Attrition takes out half of new hires by year 5 and enrollment at teacher prep programs are at historic lows. Lots of openings this fall to be had, so you can live the dream yourself! Go for it!
Damn, if this information had only been revealed when they chose their profession. I hear nuns are bitching a lot too about the pay and dress code. Victims of fraudulent enticement! For all the complaints of the lavish $38,000 a year teacher starting salary (after taking on $50,000 in student loan debt), the fact that they actually get (GASP) sick days, and once had a pension (which has now been replaced by a hybrid 401k type plan with no social security) . . . Is posting in GYERO while taking a crap becoming a trend?
This place really IS getting old:
AARPGYERO
Was it a good poop? I had one the other day ago that I was so proud of I nearly took a picture of it lolI am on my planning period right now. It's actually just about over (38 min). Here's what I did, it's a pretty average planning period.
- Fine tuned a lesson on Reconstruction I'm giving today
- Made copies
- Called a parent while copies were running
- Went to find assistant principal to talk about above parent conversation
- Pooped
- Responded to this thread (while pooping)
I don't respect whiny bitches. Sorry if that hits too close to home for you. This thread is proof you don’t respect teachers. A big problem is parents want no part in supporting their kids academic progress. But you do you.
So they stay until 4?This may be true with high school teachers as that building clears out fast but my wife and daughter who teach elementary school are both at school at least an hour after kids leave getting ready for the next day. If they don't then they have to go in early to get ready.
Self employed. I get no paid vacation or sick days. I have responsibilities that must be covered day, night, sick, or out of town. I pay taxes when my company makes money and again when I want to keep some of it. My employees depend on me, customers and renters need me to fix things even when I have to go into their COVID quarantined space to make repairs. My starting salary was zero and I have no retirement or health benefits.Would really like to know what some of you do for a living. Would be interesting.
You just described why I don’t respect you hossI don't respect whiny bitches. Sorry if that hits too close to home for you.
The teachers at my kid's school are saints IMO.
You sure post a lot during the day.So they stay until 4?
I didn't realize they had it so hard![]()

I'm not complaining about my job though, because I chose to do it and enjoy doing it. If I ever decide I don't like it, I'm intelligent enough to do something different rather than blame everyone else for my dissatisfaction.
Waiting on attorneys for a closing while I eat lunch. You sure post a lot during the day.![]()
Nope. Not whining a bit. Just pointing out how stupid teachers unions and their sycophants sound acting like their situations are uniquely difficult. But your not whining![]()
Our schools don't start letting students out until 3:20 and it's usually at least 4:30 before most elementary teachers get to leave. Of course they also are there around 7:15 so you know according to some on here a typical 6 hour work day.So they stay until 4?
I didn't realize they had it so hard![]()
Exactly. Can't count how many family things I missed work wise. Worked so many days in a row before, literally had no idea what day it was.Yeah. Who here has not had to cancel or reschedule a vacation because of work? Out of the three months a teacher has off, we should get teary eyed because her planned vacation occurred when she had training? Wow.
Spare me. When you have to work 10-12hrs a day 7 days a week then I'll try to care. Until then....nadaThis may be true with high school teachers as that building clears out fast but my wife and daughter who teach elementary school are both at school at least an hour after kids leave getting ready for the next day. Why are you being forced to work 10-12 hours per day 7 days per week? You should probably contact the dept of labor.Spare me. When you have to work 10-12hrs a day 7 days a week then I'll try to care. Until then....nada
Whew....rough....no wonder you guys need 3 months off. Plus allthose holidays off. Must be hard finding stuff to do with all that time off. It's been said many times but if school starts at 8:00 that busses start dropping kids off around 7:30 so teachers have to be there when kids start coming in. Man....7:15am? How is that even legal? Have a heart man. And then they stay until 4:30? Are you a prison warden or something? Our schools don't start letting students out until 3:20 and it's usually at least 4:30 before most elementary teachers get to leave.
