By stating these were strategically placed throughout the state may have been the part MSU was worried about.

I remember Memphis putting up a billboard outside of Joe Jackson's hometown saying something like "Memphis, is not for your average Joe". Im not sure they got in trouble for that or not.

we didn't know it was toeing the NCAA lines. It was brought to our attention by someone (not the NCAA), so we took them down to try to avoid potential NCAA scrutiny.

I'll buy that, especially because I think the locations make it pretty clear what the motive of the billboards was. This is the SEC. We have more NCAA police in our fan ranks than anywhere else in the country.

As I said, regardless of whether it's a secondary violation or not, I think it's well worth the move to try it. Secondary violations don't hurt, even if they do stick you with one, so why not go ahead with it?

1) Heisman QB wants to play here for money and we decline
2) ingenious billboard plan is executed, but somebody notices its cheating right after we out ourselves to the world

We've been ***** footing around for too long, and if you are going to commit them, make them count.

we don't have any damn business putting a sign up that say or resembles "the best" ...especially one with football players on it.

I have no idea if we took them down because of the NCAA or not, but either way the billboard had already had its effect. Leaving it up through the end of the month wouldn't have made much difference. What leads me to believe we may be telling the truth that the NCAA didn't have anything to do with taking them down is it's really not any different than the UM Road to the Pro Bowlbillboard (also well done and a good idea) or the USM Connerly/Howell/(don't know and don't care who the other one is)Trophy billboard (just awful).
