I ask you, is this...

<span style="font-style: italic;">A cherished addage we should all live by. Respect for yourself and your opponent is the threshold of sportsmanship. </span>

or

<span style="font-style: italic;">An overstated phrase used by condescending ******** (especially Alabama fans) as a way to take a cheap shot at another team when they are getting/have gotten their own *** beat.</span>

I'm going to go with the second one. I've heard that line uttered no less than 100 times in 3 years in this hell hole of Birmingham, and always at an opposing team that has achieved something Alabama couldn't that year.

Your thoughts?

they are definitely words to live by, but then again I live in Starkville so I don't have to listen to pompous Bama fans spewing psuedo-intellectual ******** day in and day out...I think that would have a big effect on my answer...
