he's done pretty well at OSU which is kind of like MSU as far as tradition / location are concerned.

Didn't Riley interview at Ole Miss when the got Cut and OM folks went balistic? Or am I thinking of someone else?

This is the kind of candidate we should be going after. Not that Riley is actually interested in us, but this is the type guy we should be after.

If we hire Dooley, it should be after 6 or 7 others have turned us down.

Don't screw this up Byrne.

Perhaps better than Petersen. As far as I know, Petersen has never built a program. Riley is the kind of guy that we need. Who cares if he has ties to Bama?

Look at Riley's bio. In 1998, Oregon State went 5-6. That was Oregon State's best record in 27 YEARS! Holy ****. He's been bowling the past 4 out of 5 years. We couldn't go wrong with this guy. Incredible hire.

Another candidate I would really like us to pursue is Jim Harbaugh. I've said that 100 times but still.

Edited to add that Mike Riley only made $885,000 this year. We can easily double that.

might even rank him higher than Bowden based on what he has done with a (at one time) dead-end OSU program.

Note that the 5-6 record he posted in 1998 was Oregon State's best record since 1971. Yes, it's THAT hard to win there.

This rumor is way out there and it's not a name that one would ordinarily make up. I trust you are not. I like where this coaching search is headed.

Do your DD. He is from Oregon and will stay there. He didn't take the Alabama job and was offered twice.
Move on to the next rumor.

Riley would be awesome!

Yes, he has ties to Bama, but I don't think he worships him like Croom did. Plus, he has also coached in the NFL and now has been very successful in college at Oregon State, which was the Vandy of the Pac-10 before he took over. Now, they're in bowl games every year. He has developed QB's- I think Derek Anderson of the Browns went there. He runs a Pro-style/WCO- but he knows what he's doing and can tailor it to his players, unlike some other people we know. Not to mention, he almost took OSU to the Rose Bowl this year. That's not an easy place to win, and I would venture is possibly a more difficult place to win than MSU- at least before he took over. He also apparently has ties to the south, so I don't think it's a stretch to see him come back.

when Fran left due to impending probation. He didn't want to deal with it.

However, from what I can tell you are right.. his dad was the DC at OSU when he was a kid and seems this is his dream job.

fiasco. He's content up there. He's got a steady paycheck and doesn't want to get involved in the SEC merry go round.

Here is a link to his current salary, buyout, etc.

http://ncaafootball.fanho...pac-10-millionaires-club/

"I asked Alabama for some time so I could visit UCLA, and Alabama felt like it needed to get going," Riley said. "I understand that, but it was also important for me to explore the UCLA situation, so we went in different directions."

That could be construed as turning it down (Ala. job) or it could be viewed that Ala. took the offer off of the table as well.
