After consulting with myself it is obvious we have to make a change.

Assuming a couple of things.

(a) the math thrown around here about potential loss of revenue if Croom stays and increase in revenue from new coach, extra home game, small increase in game ticket, and SEC cash is correct.

(b) the schedule next year is brutal. We will be lucky to win 3 games.

Croom will not be able to win more than 4 games next year...best case scenario. That means we fire him next year and we are 2010 rebuilding with new coach and 2011 hoping to be better.

To me it is tougher decision to keep him than can him now. In fact, if I am AD, I am having to be sold on not canning his *** effective Nov 29th. The only way Croom should be here in '09 is if he wins out.

but did the SEC have many HC openings after the '03 season?

There's coaching turnover every year, but this year it's UT and maybe AU. Do we want to be in the market the same year as them?

This post shouldn't be viewed as support for Croom returning next year. I'm just thinking out loud.

...think about this. One winning season since 2001. This year will be a losing season, as will next year. Like you said, if a new coach comes in with new staff in 2010, the most realistic scenario would be a winning season in 2011, the new coach's second year. He might well win in his first year, but you can't really expect him to or blame him if he doesn't. That said, I don't think we can stand to wait until 2011 to start consistently winning again. We can only take so much losing, before we are in danger of becoming permanent SEC doormat.

There are too many reasons for him to be gone in late November, and they just overwhelm our recruiting class.

but I still think our job is slightly more attractive if it's the only SEC job available. Of course, no guarantee that would ever happen.

So what about tubs....If he does not get to stay at Auburn, wouldn't we be fools not to at least quietly contact him? See if he has interest, I would think he would be an easy pick for Clemson but if he wanted to stay in the SEC, he could reach god-like status here. Its funny, I have truly hated that man for years now and the more I think about him being on our sidelines, the more I like the SOB....

and all the teams in the SEC

SEC East:
Florida - Meyer not leaving
Tennessee - will already have a new coach
Georgia - Richt is not going anywhere
Kentucky - already named their next coach
Vanderbilt - Johnson is not leaving
South Carolina - Hmmmm....I maybe could see Spurrier hanging them up in the next few years.

SEC West:
LSU - Miles is there for a few more.
Alabama - Saban nope
Auburn - might have a new coach
Ole Miss - Nutt nope
Arkansas - Petrino nope

So in 2009, the only school we could be competing against is South Carolina. And if USC is looking for a coach, I actually see us shooting for the same targets. USC, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Arkansas - I would put in the same league as far as what kinds of coaches we would attract. So I would much rather not compete against anyone in the SEC thats in our echelon (2008) than possibly compete against someone who will go after the same coaches (2009 and USC).

I was under the impression that Junior would ascend the throne when Daddy hangs it up.

DS, I think it is time for you guys to pull all the info you've got stacked against Croom and get Byrne to make it happen. Its time for SPS to use its clout.

The last time they thought their coach's son would succeed him, they wound up firing Lou Holtz and Skip had to find a job at East Carolina.</p>
