If we're playing no doubles, which I have no idea why we weren't, he takes a couple of steps and catches it like a routine fly ball.

seemed to take several steps in before he realized he had screwed up and started running back. Regardless of where he is playing, his first few steps cannot be toward home plate. I would even give the guy a pass if the wind was blowing out toward center and pushed the ball back but the wind was blowing from the N to NW, out of left field.
