I counted 36 donors that gave $5K or more in 2009. Even in a difficult year for most, does anyone else consider that depressingly weak?

A co-worker of mine was telling me that he has a well-to-do uncle that lives a couple coves down for Jeff Fisher in Nashville. This same uncle has been giving $5K or more for the last 40+ years to UT, and they just kicked him out of the parking lot he's been in for about 20 years.

I know that this is nothing groundbreaking, but it really is incredible sometimes to realize how far we are behind other SEC schools.

and saw Vanderbilt at the top I believe. What shocked me was that Auburn was just ahead of us at 11. Not surprised at all we were last

The worst thing Mississippi ever did was creating 2 major colleges in the Northeast corner of the state. The mistakes of Mississippi politics from 130 years ago continue to screw up this state to this day.

They could have built one in Madison in 1870 called the Mississippi State Rebels that would today be an SEC power, helped build Jackson into a much larger and probably better-run capital city, and lifted the overall cynicism and education of this state into a much better position than ut currently sits...but instead, too many people sat by and let the wrong people make the decisions then, just like they sat around and let the idiots from the White Citizens Council even further ruin our state.

Now, that's better.

to see a complete demographics breakdown and comparison of the contributions to each school's respective athletic funds. Most other SEC schools simply have a large alumni base than both Ole Miss and MSU, but I have a feeling that the number of $5K+ annual donations in the 40 and over crowd for nearly every other school would completely dwarf our own.

I don't think we'll live to see the day where Ole Miss and MSU are combined, but with the way that sports revenue is driving decisions these days, I guess I'll never say never.

The first time I really realized just how little the average State fan gives was last year when they auctioned off the chance to "call" the plays at the Spring Game. At any other school, something like that would have gone for at least $20,000. At State, it weant for $5,000.

I bet Ole Miss has double or triple the number of boosters who give $5,000 or more a year.

I'm pretty sure when some of my friends started med school that State had the highest number of entrants for that class.

Immediate Edit: referring to UMMC of course

Is36possibly thenumber of donors from the category of $5000-$10,000?

All donations to the Bulldog Club count in the foundation report. If you take a typical Club seat owner that has 4 tickets, it requires a$5000 pledge each year topurchase those 4 tickets. The math of only 36 giving over $5000 breaks pretty quick when you consider we have ~1300 Club seats.

What I think happens in that report is that it ends up placing people in giving categories based on their lifetime giving once you reach a certain threshold. So if the $5000 donor that buys 4 Club tickets has given $125K during their lifetime they will be grouped in the $100,000 - $250,000 group of donors.

This doesn't mean we should be excited abouthow well we stack up against other SEC programs, but things aren't quite as bad as only having 36 donors giving over $5000 per year.

maybe both...but I know in 2008 there werearound 130donors that gave more than $12K a year. The story remains sad, but not to the depths I'm interpreting your statement.
