Again stealing 3rd. Why?!

2. Would have been an issue if KG didn't make Ficociello his *****

This is my problem with this team and base running. Stealing third with 2 outs is jackass base running and it does not even come on the fly, it is a decision made before the pitch. It is dumbass baseball and we are still doing in year 5 of Cohen.

I have zero problem stealing second with two outs, because it puts a guy in scoring position....stealing 3RD with 2 outs is dumb as ****.

I agree that it certainly was a bad call. Or more precisely -- a big mistake was certainly made...

I could see trying the double steal if the guy at first was an important run or something(down 2 for instance and trying to get the tying run into scoring position) -- but we'd been playing small ball for one run for a couple of innings there -- and all of a sudden we're getting greedy and trying to get a 2nd guy in scoring position? Was Detz stealing on the play?(so we can establish that it was a double-steal and not Renfroe stealing on his own).

What if a sign was missed by Rea there? I absolutely love hit and run with 2 on and 2 outs because they've got to cover both bags -- leaving you the 4-hole and the 6-hole both wide open to hit a ground a ball through. With both runners moving, a weak grounder through either hole scores the lead run almost automatically and puts the second guy on 3rd 9 times out of 10 -- and you score 2 on anything in the gap. Is is still a stupid call? Probably so -- given who was at bat(a guy with power where a 2b potentially scores them both anyway) -- and Rea's propensity to swing through pitches.

At that point when you are up 3 with a runner on 2nd and 2 outs it is inexcusable. He's scoring on anything which would put you up 4. I don't like the hit and run in most situations, and especially with a big bat at the plate, and especially like you said when that bat swings and misses a lot.

You like hitting and running with two outs? That's a well known baseball no no. If we do it, I'd prefer a contact, low power guy at the plate, and no outs, and a runner on 1st base only

And the infuriating thing to fans is this stuff is not an isolated incident, we make these inexcusable blunders repeatedly. Just like Amaratti making the 2nd out of the sixth inning at second base on the sac fly play when we had bases loaded and noone out. It just happens over and over and over and we don't LEARN anything from our stupid mistakes.

Another great post. That is why everyone is so damn frustrated. It's not the losses....it's the dumb **** we do over and over and over and over.

I want to know

if it was a ball in the dirt that the catcher blocked. I've noticed us running on those a few times this year and I have seen that mistaken for a stolen base attempt. Probably in part because our official scorer scores those as stolen bases when it probably should have been scored a wild pitch. I didn't watch the game.

My feeling is if you are going to steal third in that situation, you better make it. If you don't, you have to deal with the wrath of the fans and media and whoever else.

But as far as the why you do it, I think this link says it all. It does say that there are 25 ways to score from third base, but I'll go ahead and say that it's really a little bit less since this isn't a bases loaded situation.

It was on a 2-2 count. The pitch was a fastball inside, not in the dirt. Renfroe was out by a mile

You're not going to hit and run when:
1. You have a power hitter up
2. You have 2 outs
3. You have 2 strikes

It was a steal attempt, and dumb as hell.

Then yeah, it probably wasn't the best idea in the world.

I still want to know if it was a double steal? Basically, that would prove it was a called play -- and not Renfroe being a moron moving on the pitch thinking an additional ball had been thrown and it was a full count with 2 outs...

And none of those 25 ways work if you get your *** shot down trying to take third with 2 outs.
