Georgia where the SEC championship football game is played has the first national flag of the confederacy.

Here is that flag.

that the flag from march 1861 to may 1861 had seven stars. The flag from may 1861 to July 1861 had eight stars and from July 1861 until the secon flag it had 13 stars like the GA flag. I thought I would point that out before some posted that they are two different flags.

But we reap what we sow with the flag issue. Right or wrong, it's perceived as a racially insensitive flag and that's just the way it is. My main problem with it is that it's an ugly-*** flag though.

The contrived star pattern got me dizzy, not to mention it seemed a bit forced on interpretation.

The problem with the flag replacement was that they didn't try to make a design that people would like. Instead of "let's excise the confederate part of the flag," they should have said "let's have a flag that everyone in Mississippi can be proud of." Maybe a magnolia tree in it or incorporate the Bonnie Blue in it, but you might end up with something too close to South Carolina's flag.

I think that proposed flag was designed to lose the vote. And you're right, it was even uglier.

I guess it shows just how irrelevant USM and Conference USA are b/c they somehow got one of their upcoming tournaments into the same venue in Pearl and I don't recall ever hearing a peep about the flag. </p>

to keep the flag last time. I felt strongly about it. I will not vote for another flag to become our new flag.

My only compromise would be to just do away with any official state flag. Many would still fly it, but it wouldn't be official. Also, we couldn't be called racists anymore b/c we don't have a racist flag.

And we all know that living in a state that has a flag that existed during slavery means that you are automatically racist. It's scientific fact.

the Alabama State Flag is a Confederate Battle Flag.

It is amazing how those who try to use history to make points are so ignorant about history.

...because I bought the business argument presented even though the proposed flag wasn't that great looking.Ifthe Flag Commission seriously wanted Mississippi to have a replacement flag though, they should have nominated this flag:

The Magnolia Flag was Mississippi's flag during the Civil War until it was succeeded by the current flag. It has the added benefit of being historically related to Mississippi during the Civil War without the negative feelings and opinions expressed by many people with regard toour current flag.

whats more racially insensitive, the mississippi flag, or the current flag we fly over the country? more slavery existed under it, than any other flag.....not to mention, the civil war wasnt fought over slavey, and slavery existed for the union up until halfway thru the war....

sorry for the history lesson, but i say it stays until people become educated......but, with left wing media running the world, itll never happen.....

ok, you can lock the thread now.

I've heard it is actually a derivative of the St Andrews Cross flag - which was actually incorporated into battle flags, i.e. Polk's Corp flag.

didn't you read all the criteria they were looking at? Peal has a small stadium and plenty of parking. Unless you consider Bass Pro Shop "other entertainment" it's not a serious contender. I'll be surprised if the tourney isn't in Memphis.

it isn't a CW battle flag.

The current Flag of the State of Alabama (the second in the state's history) was adopted by Act 383 of the Alabama state legislature on February 16, 1895:</p><table style="margin: auto; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: none; background-color: transparent; width: auto;" class="cquote"><tbody><tr><td style="color: rgb(178, 183, 242); font-size: 35px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left; padding: 10px;" valign="top" width="20">“</td><td style="padding: 4px 10px;" valign="top">The flag of the State of Alabama
shall be a crimson cross of St. Andrew on a field of white. The bars
forming the cross shall be not less than six inches broad, and must
extend diagonally across the flag from side to side." - (Code 1896, §3751; Code 1907, §2058; Code 1923, §2995; Code 1940, T. 55, §5.)</td><td style="color: rgb(178, 183, 242); font-size: 36px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: right; padding: 10px;" valign="bottom" width="20">”</td></tr></tbody></table>

The cross of St. Andrew referred to in the law is a diagonal cross, known in vexillology as a saltire. Because the bars must be at least six inches wide, small representations of the Alabama flag do not meet the legal definition.</p>
