Alabama discussing splitting public and private for playoffs

Interesting to follow. The AHSAA governs all athletics for public and most private schools. Private schools are highly competitive in the middle classes and there is some tension.

This proposal keeps the private schools in the AHSAA but will separate them in the postseason.

They are one of the only states that do it right. And now they are going to go and 17 it up. And it's the private schools doing it! Bltching about the multiplier. They need to STFU and play ball, they are doing fine.

Yep. But I’d add that everyone is bitching.

I went back to my dads last week and my brother and sister in law were pissed that their perfect season was ended by a private school that had recruited a kid from them in 8th grade.

Tennessee (TSSAA) did a complete split in 19. Almost all private schools in Tennessee play in Division II anyway but there were a few exceptions and that was drawing complaints based on financial aid and recruiting so they made the few remaining outliers in Division I move to II.

Public and private schools often play each other in Tennessee but they split for playoffs.

It’s not just the multiplier, which is stupid. They also penalize programs by forcing them up in class if they perform well. So when a 3A private school, which is really the size of a 2A school, has a good run with a strong class, they get bumped up as high as 5A and then they have to get steamrolled for years when that strong class graduates. This happens over and over. There are schools who don’t even field teams in some sports for years because at the lower levels, a big class leaving can be your whole varsity squad leaving 7th to 9th graders to play varsity up 3 classes.

I honestly don’t see this as a valid excuse. Private school advantages must be mitigated.

You sound like one of those guys who brags about travel ball rings (3 team tournament of course).
More like someone who’s had sons and daughters play in the AHSAA for quite a while. You should sit a few plays out here. You’re out of your element.

Exactly. You obviously mad you didn’t win.

I’m sure your kids turned out just fine regardless of the horrific discrimination they faced as private school athletes.

You are so stupid. I’m not mad about winning or losing. I’m not mad at all. I hate to see schools abandon sports programs for years because people with inferiority complexes need to punish excellence. You have no idea what you’re talking about at all. My kids won a few rings and did fine. But let me educate you, if that’s possible.

There’s a private school from Montgomery who just had a crazy run in girls basketball. 3 straight state titles. Trinity Presbyterian. So of course, they are moved up beyond their size in classification. But those girls have graduated, and they aren’t as good now but they are still playing up. Tough break for the kids left behind I guess.

But here’s how stupid the rule is. Their boys team has to move up with them. I saw them play in tournament early this year. They have 8 players. These boys are playing up 2 classifications, with eight guys. I asked a parent and they said they graduated a lot of seniors and this is what’s left. I was stunned

Of course they are getting dominated. Who does that help? No one. But hey, we got to keep if fair for the public school parents with little man syndrome like you. So screw those kids right?

OG Goat Holder, what experience do you have with this? Are you a resident of Alabama? I am and have two boys playing football at a private school that doesn’t recruit. Enrollment hovers around 400ish students and right now they are in 5A (380-600 students). This class seems about right, but every student that enrolls counts as 1.35 students, so the school could quickly end up in 6A. The school was bumped up to 6A for a while and they got absolutely murdered. It took a while of getting demoralized by schools more than twice as large, but they finally moved them back down to 5A.

Just take a look at some of the public school powerhouses in Alabama. It is common knowledge that they recruit players, but nothing is done to them. There’s no moving up classifications when a team like Saraland or Moody dominates everyone in 5A or 6A. Moody destroyed everyone on the way to their title, with the closest margin of victory being a 24 point win with point being scored in garbage time to make it more respectable than the score showed.

Finally, if high school athletics is supposed to be about the students, should a private school have to drive 2 hours for every game just so they can play another similar sized private school?

The student multiplier is crap, but competitive balance is fine… as long as it applies to all the schools in the state. If you want to recruit and poach players… fine. It may just cost you bumping up to 6A or 7A and competing against Thompson or Saraland or Hoover. That would be the most fair for every school in Alabama.

Dipshit has been out of his element and playing in his own special league for years.
