Saying it will "take more than a scholarship" could mean any number of things. I'd say for Cam's dad it means off the field development and an environment that would help Cam stay on the right track. This is a father whose son left Florida after a run in with the law, so obviously he wants to be sure his son isn't going into a situation where he'll run a risk of getting into trouble. The "money was too much" bit could pertain to the actual cost of attending school at MSU. Remember that one of the reasons given for Cam choosing Auburn was its proximity to home. Cam liked MSU and Coach Mullen, but ultimately let his father decide where he'd attend school. The kid drives a scooter around campus, not some nice car or SUV, so who's to say that money isn't tight at the Newton household and his parents would rather him stay close to home so he can make the trip home on the weekend to get some groceries if he needs to? Plus they save money on travel if they don't have to find the money to make it to Starkville for games.

I really don't believe Coach Chizik, or anyone on this staff would offer to pay Newton to play football here...folks like Malzahn, Taylor and Luper are all good coaches who will most likely be head coaches one day, so I find it very hard to believe they'd allow themselves to be a part of a pay for play scheme. It would be career suicide. Take it with a grain of salt, it's easy to take things out of context and make them appear to say something they aren't. If our athletic department has known about this since July, I doubt they would have let Cam Newton see the field if there was any doubt that he wasn't eligible.
