Saw where Todd posted his on another board, but if you could fill a staff of position coaches with only former MSU players, what would your staff look like? Coaches that could coach and still recruit well

QB's- Matt Wyatt
RB's- Anthony Dixon
OLine- Porkchop Womack
WR's- Eric Moulds
DLine- Fletcher Cox
LB's- Clarence McDougal
DB's- Smootdawg
Special Teams- (Because I like him and I think he would be a positive presence, not necessarily that he knows anything about Special Teams) Tyson Lee

LB's Barrin Simpson-One of the nicest people I have ever met next to Eugene Clinton. SpecialTeams- Frankie Luster or Andy Russ(after all, Russ is the only special teams player I can think of for State that was part of an ESPY).

Love that you put Clarence McDougal on there. Not only is he a great bulldog, he's a great guy. I spoke to him last year after the Arkansas game and he had just finished coaching Co Lin to a Championship. He would be a good one to get on board one day, and I know he wants too...he said so himself.

It kills me to think about how great he and CoCo Hodge would have been for MSU if they both hadn't sustained horrible leg injuries the year before they got to campus. Clarence was the best player in the State as a RB/Safety, but he would have never played RB had CoCo not been injured at the beginning of his Senior season. CoCo was a Michael Davis, JJ Johnson, Anthony Dixon type....and sadly only the people who saw him play for Clinton will ever know how talented he was.

QB's- Matt Wyatt
RB's- Norwood or dicenzo
OLine- Michael fair
WR's- Eric moulds or maybe Kevin prentiss
DLine- Fletcher Cox
LB's- Cam Lawrence, Mario haagan? Or Paul Lacoste?
DB's- Smootdawg? Josh Morgan?
Special Teams- mind is blank. Who was the punter signed by the Seahawks?

Those are mine based mainly on who seemed to get the most out of their ability. Qb and dl are the one's I'm least sure about. I might would go Russell at qb just because I think he's the only qb we've had that got better than ndecent coaching.

QB's- Kevin Fant
RB's- Robert Elliot
OLine- Joey Trapp OR Michael Brown
WR's- Co-Eric Riley
DLine- Rodney Prince
LB's- Anthony Littlejohn
DB's- Zach Smith
Special Teams- Adam Carlson

Offensive Coordinator - Michael Henig
Defensive Coordinator - Mike Hunt

Head Coach - Fred Smoot

I thought this thread might have potential when I clicked on it but I thought it meant former coaches "all time".

Some of this is a joke, right?

Saw McDougal in the Madison Central - Clinton game in 1999. There were something ridiculous like 9 Dandy Dozen players in that game (either that year or the next 2 years). Clarence McDougal was like a man among boys. He was by far the best player on that field that night.

Neither Kevin Fant nor Michael Brown were horrible players. Your youth is showing.

Another vote for McDougal as a very good bulldog. Sad day when he got hurt but he busted his *** to get back. He loves MSU and gave it his all.

What? No. Kevin Fant managed to throw 2,000+ yards with an offensive line that could only dominate a high school JV squad, but he still represents one of the most humorous (now) periods in MSU history. The godsend QB that came to elevate MSU from an SEC championship appearance to untold heights ends his career statistically a nightmare and is forever forgotten aside from getting free tires. Michael Brown is also on that list for comedic relief. If you can't laugh about their careers/career ending stories it's just sad.

To tell you the truth I still think Co-Eric Riley was one of the most gifted WR's to ever come through MSU's halls. If he had gone to a school with a QB on their roster who knows what could have happened. Robert Elliot was also an unfortunate story, because you can't teach talent like his.

I didn't mean it to be a list of only awful players, although I don't know how else to categorize a QB who won 2 games in a season and a lineman who fired a gun on campus a semester before getting drafted who was never heard of again... regardless of how "good" they were, which I'm agreeing with you... they were good.

ETA: Littlejohn was only on that list because I still think it's funny he decided to graduate and not return instead of coming back for a redshirt senior season. Writing was on the wall.

What a ****** way to judge someone.

If Kevin Fant represents anything to MSU fans, it should be the depths at which our fans can eat one of our own. Here's a guy with plenty of talent, who wanted to do good things at MSU, but was a victim of terrible circumstance. Just a continuance of the QB curse. Show glimpses of greatness, but never can satisfy the irrational fans due to things outside their control.

JACKIE SHERRILL represents that low point in MSU history, unfortunately. As far as humorous, the Sly Croom Error wins that award, first for the circus he came in under, then the joke of a coaching job he did. Had Jackie retired after 2001 or 2002, he'd have a statue at Davis Wade and Jimbo Fisher probably would have coached those 2003 and 2004 teams to winning records.

Regarding Michael Brown, he's almost the sole reason for our rise at the end of 2006 and all throughout 2007. Comical, I tell ya.

I don't know who I would pick in this theoretical exercise but anybody on a D1 staff would need to have shown some previous aptitude to coach as a grad assistant, HS, JC or whatever. In reality, I would never want to have a staff made up entirely of former players any more than I'd want the academic faculty made up entirely of former MSU students. Way too professionally incestuous. Plus, I'd like a few guys on the staff to be able to flash a championship ring or two in a recruit's face. Not many former MSU players can do that.

Again, if you can't laugh about it now it's just sad. MSU fans owe everything to that 6 or 7 years for getting us to where we are now. We can talk about what if's or should have been's but Jimbo Fisher may or may have come here and he likely (based on everything) would have left shortly after having any glimmer of success. We likely don't overhaul the athletic department, we likely don't see the biggest turnaround in the NCAA in giving, and we likely don't out of the blue have 23 sellouts and a stadium expansion.

I am being a little cynical here, but it's just the truth. What other way do you see our fan base coming alive like is has and the football team having such high expectations like they now do other than going through the WORST stretch of success in school history following the first bit of consistent success since the 1940's?

I'm sorry that I think it as a whole is funny. I don't see any other way to look at it. The first game I ever attended for crying out loud was a 3-2 loss to Auburn.

To make a legitimate list how about as a modern...

QB - Rockey Felker
RB - James Johnson
WR - Eric Moulds
TE - Marcus Green (only because the guy is literally already a college coach)
Oline - Johnathan Stewart
OR Porkchop
Dline - Tommy Kelly
DB - Smoot (obviously)
LB - Brandon Wilson (engineer, so smart)
Special teams - Jackie Sherrill

Our self-induced football purgatory is very sad. Not funny.

What's even worse is that we are destined to repeat history. You can already tell by the general attitude of the fanbase.
