All State Team, when did they change from just one All State Team for all classes to one for every class?

When there was only 5 classes it was still one All State Team and I think that continued for a little while when they went to 6 classes but I'm not sure.

Or am I having a total memory lapse here?

Memory lapse.
Many publications have had an “all state” team over the years. As long as I can remember, the IHSFCA has done it by class, even when there were 6 classes.

Some publications have just one single all state team. I remember reading through the News Gazettes all state team in years past. I know the Trib and I assume sun times did an all state team as well. I have not read any papers all state team in years so I am not sure which ones still even have an all state team.

but for as long as I can remember, the coaches all state team has been by class. And I believe the rules have always limited each team to 2 nominees and, thus, two selections. Not sure if that is still the case.

Well that would explain why ESL & Warren don’t have every position filled in 6A & 8A :D

That must be what I remember was the Chicago Papers All State Team that typically came out a week or so after the Chicagoland All Area Team.

You have to remember that back in the 70's and early 80's the was NO INTERNET, we got all our news from TV and Newspapers. (While we were walking 20 miles to school, uphill both ways!)

For many years, The Champaign News Gazzette was authority (the king-maker) for determining THE State Champ via their Poll and named the All-State team.
It was an honor to be ranked or named to their All-State team.
As the State Playoffs began in 1974 the mystique of their blessing slowly faded.
The Chicago Tribune also had their annual Golden Helmet team that brought together hundreds of the area's best players for a recognition dinner at a downtown hotel.
In the early 1970s a writer for The Chicago Daily News (Chicago's last afternoon newspaper) named Taylor Bell emerged as the authority of High a School football in Illinois.
Also in the 1970s Jerry Schnay of The Chicago Tribune introduced his "Prep Power Rankings" that appeared to use some type of mathematical formula seemingly based on wins, losses, margin of victory, strength of schedule and game stats as the paper's coverage of High School football grew.
The Chicago Sun Times bought the Daily News and Taylor Bell's writings were seen by a larger readership and he too was naming "All State" teams.,

Hard to judge the All-Star Teams if a coach didn’t submit names. Shame on any coach that didn’t do that especially if this is an annual thing. Maybe you could handicap the teams based upon all-stars? There’s what the score is on that:

8A
# 4 Warren 2
# 24 BR 0

# 3 LWE 2
# 23 Marist 0

7A
# 1 MC 0
# 5 Willowbrook 1

# 2 Nazareth 1
# 3 Rolling Meadows 1

6A
# 1 ESL 2
# 2 Glenwood 2

# 1 Cary Grove 1
# 2 Deerfield 1

5A
# 2 Rochester 1
# 12 Mascoutah 1

# 2 Boylan 0
# 8 SR 2

4A
# 1 Coal City 2
# 2 Richmond-Burton 1

# 3 Effingham 1
# 9 Murphysboro 2

These are not great lists ... we all agree. I think most egregious is that not one ESL receiver is on the 6A team. Did not look at other on the team - don’t want to say someone should not be named, but really? There are guys in 6a better than Juju Lovett?

The teams have a limit of two names submitted per team. Makes it a lot easier for the people screening the names. It does hurt very good teams that have a lot of talent. How many All-Stars could #1 Lincoln Way East have if they were not limited to two players?

I'm not saying you're wrong, but Yorkville got 1 guy on the 7A team and two guys as honorable mention.

I was just going of of what the above poster stated as the limit of two. I stand corrected.

Is Lovett a transfer from Belleville? If he is the same kid I saw last year as a sophomore and he was great.

There isn't a limit on the amount of players a coach can nominate.

I can’t see the coaching staffs at Mount Carmel, Br. Rice, Marist or Loyola not submitting any names....unless I’m missing something. I’m an old school guy too I liked the Tribune and Sun Times All State teams too when they actually did it by position. @EdgyTim I’m anxiously awaiting yours!

It was a little more difficult this year to submit names. Way too many steps to nominate a kid.
