All the people whining about Byrne scheduling Southern....

really come off as a bunch of sissies (for lack of a stronger word).

I have not contributed to any of the USM threads that have popped up here over the years, but the whole "we have nothing to gain" argument is just dumb. We have a quality opponent in our own backyard. Why not play them? All the bitching reeks of fear. Who gives a damn if we get beat by Southern? I would rather play Southern and have a good chance of winning than get thumped by Houston. Moreover, the national media/football writers are aware that Southern is a quality opponent. Do you actually believe that we would gain nothing by beating them? That this would somehow hamper are chances at what? A BCS Bowl? That is funny.

What else? Are you scared we are going to legitimize them or expose the fact that they may field a better team then we do some years? Big 17ing deal. Maybe that will straighten our asses out and get us to rethink our recruiting/coaching etc.

I do believe that in years that we play Southern, they should be our toughest non-conf. No need to go scheduling an ACC opponent or BIG 12 aslo ran concurrently.

It just gets to me everytime someone says this is a mistake by Byrne or that they don't want to play Southern. Have some pride. I say bring them on. We will probably beat their *** and be done with it, but if we lose, we will lose to a decent team. I would rather get beat by Southern than MTSU for 17s sake.

I say bring their *** on. I have been following MSU sports since the early 70's and I am one that misses this old rivalry. Hey at least the MSU message boards have come alive cause quite frankly they have been somewhat dead.

in your first breath you chastise the board as being "a bunch of sissies", and in the next you seem afraid to play anyone tougher in the same year.

Odd.

We should be fielding pretty good teams by the time the series starts and should beat them both games. If anything it will be a good chance to shut up the damn psycho southern fans

I am just acknowledging that they are a good team. I don't care if it is Houston and G-Tech. I just dont think we should overload our non-conf. with dangerous opponents. One good, quality opponent a year is plenty, we get enough of a challenge during the SEC slate. I do think we should play at least one decent non-conference game a year. Whether it be a top notch CUSA team or a down ACC/Big 12/PAC 10/BIG 10 team or Southern, doesnt matter to me. I just dont think we should play 2. Just playing Houston this year would have been fine, or JUST playing G-Tech. Playing both was dumb.

All the whiners on this board aren't scared of Southern's talent, they are scared that someone might say something mean to them if we end up losing. They are scared that Joe Shmoe from Wiggins might pick Southern over State in a recruiting battle. Big deal. I am not concerned about losing any amount of recruits to Southern that would make a difference.

...I never post here anymore for the specific reason these type posts no longer appear on this board.

Meaning after the Vandy win, that win royally pissed off about 70% of the sixpack posters. So the result was the sixpack board (as usual) spent 3 days & nights smearing & bashing the football team for daring to win a SEC road game. It was a veritable frenzy of ignorance.

But back to this post: When I see a post that nails all the salient points concerning playing USM in football, I am going to log in & give the rare decent sixpack post the props it deserves.

Lastly, as far as the "we have nothing to gain" meme. One thing to gain by playing USM in football is none of the sixpack posters will show up. (At least judging by all the bitching & whining we are seeing on this board today). That, in turn, will make for a better atmosphere for all the normal fans in attendance.

Stop all the whining and complaining. This isn't some monumental decision with dire consequences.

What if we lose? Then we deserved no glory anyway.

Get over it. I assure you Mullen isn't rubbing his palms together thinking oh dear lord what if we lose.

I think this is just the way college football scheduling is going. If you can schedule a regional opponent to a reasonable contract that will fill up your home stadium, I think you have to do it. I really doubt this was done to re-spark the "rivalry" or anything of that nature; it was probably strictly the money. And I think all the talk about "legitimizing" them and them stealing our recruits should we lose a game to them is incredibly overblown.

As it looks we won'y play them until 2014 and if we can't beat Southern by then, we are in deep doo doo and people will be calling for Mullen's head.

you people are just like LT. Weak. Backwards-thinking. Complacent.

Byrne, decision after decision, is showing this neutered fanbase what it means to have a sack. Step up and follow suit.

Mullen will not be our coach in 2014. We'll either still suck and he'll have been fired, or we'll actually have been winning and he'll have taken a better job.

we are going to play Conf USA teams, which it certainly appears to be the case, --UAB,USM, Memphis --maybe a new series?, Houston, why not play Tulane? We already recruit MS heavily. we try and recruit Louisiana as much as possible and with Tulane, ....no one minds a home and home with them because quite honestly,.....New Orleans is a much more attractive road trip than Hattiesburg.

Like I said, if we play Southern, they should be considered our "tough" non-conf. game. That is exactly the type of schedule I envisioned.

is due to the fact that people are used to losing under the past administration. (LaTech, Maine, etc..)If we are headed in the direction that most people think we are, why not play them? Beat the ever living **** out of them and continue to do so as long as USM desires. I think it's any easy win even with the talent we have now.

I see alot of people on here talking about recruiting implications. If Mississippi State is battling with Southern over recruits, the Mississippi State is going after the wrong kids and its no wonder why they are struggling to keep up in the SEC.
No recruit with any sense would pick Southern over State just because they may win a few games. SEC teams will be on TV every week. That has to be huge in a recruits decsion.

I say play Southern and be happy. It will help with attendance at the home games, which will go a long way in expanding the stadium, which could enhance the home field advantage. If we are going to lose, I would rather lose to Southern than MTSU. At least Southern has a little bit of national cred.

and a two game series won't make a helluva lot of difference anyway. We may even make some hay in the media if Mississippi doesn't follow suit.

Maybe you should have joined in the other threads because there were many good, well thought out points about why we should not play USM. You bypass them and write it off with your %+%@@# up apathy. And then you want to call me a sissy because I have valid reasons I don't want to play them. You sir can go $!** yourself.
