'Bama Corner Mulling Transfer Options

Posted by John Taylor on July 22, 2009 11:57 AM
Updating a previous story, cornerback Alonzo Lawrence has been granted a release from his Alabama scholarship.

Lawrence told RebelSports.net, via the Tuscaloosa News, that the school granted his release yesterday, with one stipulation.

"I got my release from (Alabama) Coach (Nick) Saban yesterday," Lawrence told the website. "I was released to any school except the SEC West (division) schools."

That seemingly doesn't matter to Lawrence, however, as the corner is heavily considering SEC West foe Ole Miss as well as Southern Miss as potential landing spots.

Awww.

He is supposedly visiting us Friday.

The OM sites are reporting that he is waiting to see how much pell grant money he could get before deciding on OM. If it isn't enough, he'll got to USM where he can be on full scholarship.

doesn't he have to sit out two years if he goes to a school were he wasn't granted a release or is that only if the school put him on scholarship?

I've alwasy been a little confused with the transfer rules

is one year regardless of whether you were "released" to that school or not. The release simply has to do with financial aid.

I think that's an old rule.

He'll only sit out one year wherever he goes. At USM, he can be put on immediate scholarship. At OM, he'd have to pay his way due to Saban's SEC West restriction.

He'll end up at OM then if the paying his way thing is the only thing stopping him...between a Pell grant and student loans that I'm sure a booster would be willing to pay off after he plays it's really not any different than getting put on scholarship this year.

I wish he would give us a look. I know when he played in the MS/AL all-star game he looked like the best player on the field and that game included Julio Jones.

just to watch him run back kickoffs and punts. He was an excellent wide reciever also. He was Co-Eric Riley's brother.
