Obviously, not everyone’s 3 game schedule is comparable but what the hell (# Represents SEC standing):

Offense -
7th - Scoring
7th - Yards Per Carry
8th - Passing Yards / Game

Defense -
5th - Points Allowed (!)
15th - Rushing D
7th - Yards Per Game
10th - Tackles for Loss
12th - Sacks

Obviously, our points allowed is being juiced up by playing a couple of the slower pace of play teams. Expect some regression here. Even still, we’re clearly better on both sides of the ball. I feel like we’re squarely in the middle of the SEC.

Biggest surprise were only 8th in passing yards. Seems like we’ve got more than that. We’re clearly improved. But run the ball & stop the run are both still real question marks. Could be anywhere from 4 wins to 7 wins. We’ll see.

I'm really concerned about our run defense since Whitson went down with injury. ASU hammered the left side of our defense the whole second half of our game with them. Even Alcorn had some success running up the middle. We all know what that means in the SEC. Every team will hammer our DL. If we persist with the 3 down linemen teams will get an average of 5 yards on 1st down.
On the offensive side we struggled to run the ball on ASU which is a comparable team to SEC defenses. Like years past our most successful runs have been off tackle as opposed to up the gut. I know you have to attempt some up the gut to keep defenses honest but we have got to maximize yardage on attempts. The Seth Davis run was a great example of what I'm talking about with off tackle runs. Our OT have to seal the edge and force defenses to tackle our RBs in the open field.

Out of curiosity, what were these numbers before we played Alcorn State????

Our run defense will be much better than last year and that's progress. We may get some development along the defense front before we get to FL and TX in late October. Those could turn out to be winnable games.

Six games! It's not impossible.

This is the answer. This team can not stop the run, and losing Whitson is just a killer for the defense. It's going to show up when we start playing the big boys.
You could make a fairly strong argument that Whitson was the most important player on the team, in terms of needing him to stay healthy all year.

Rushing defense is the obvious concern. My other concern is offensive consistency. We just disappear too much still. It’s probably due to rushing and Oline. Let’s hope it improves as the season progresses.

The next two games will tell us a lot more than we know now.

Looked up the MSU game notes for Game 4 last year to get the rankings as of Game 3 last year (in bold):

7th - Yards Per Carry (16th)
8th - Passing Yards / Game (9th)

Defense -
5th - Points Allowed (!) (14th)
15th - Rushing D (16th)
7th - Yards Per Game (15th)
10th - Tackles for Loss (16th)
12th - Sacks (15th)

Woah I realize we are 15th in rushing defense but did not realize Ole Miss was last by a country mile. I realize they’ve played two league games but still surprising,

We play some good offenses that we are going to have a hard timing stopping, but we also play some vulnerable defenses too. If we can get our own OL to a decent place, I think we are going to be in a number of shootouts.
