Look, there will always be Penn State and Bama, that never change - and they don't have to.
The rest of us, for the most part, will do some tinkering - because we can, because the players like it, because the recruits like it, because some fans like it and because it is cool.
There is nothing wrong with the white helmets. The Russell uniforms were the problem. They were literally some of the worst, most bland, poor put together uniforms I have ever seen. They looked like high school uniforms. I don't want permanent white helmets, but I wouldn't mind seeing them every now and then. Tons of teams make white helmets look awesome - Texas, Auburn, Penn State, Florida's alternate helmet, Tennessee, etc. etc.
Personally, I like White helmets with white facemasks, see Texas and Tenn - I think that looks awesome.
While we are on the subject of White, our maroon helmet/white jersey/maroon pants combo that we wore at Houston is our best looking set. That combo just looks awesome - maybe one of my favorites of all time. The white jerseys with the maroon numbers and piping are awesome.
Re: Silver alternate helmets - I say go for it. I would rather see silver/gray pants or jerseys and keep the maroon helmet as an alternate set, but I think this would work as well. I still think the silver/gray unis worn by Boise against V-Tech were awesome just from a color standpoint. I obviously don't want oversized logos or paw prints all over the place, but I would like to see that color incorporated into an alternate uniform, it already is used as a highlight on our current uniforms and helmet.
