Hearing that we may use an "alternative" helmet during some games. (not sure if it will be this year)
Silver helmet with maroon facemask and possibly with a maroon stripe down middle.
I thought the helmet debate was over when we went back to maroon but obviously its not.
I would like to see us go to a white or gray facemask with our current helmet----at least I'm not hearing of any white helmets being brought back.
Thoughts ????

is either a white cowbell on the side of the maroon helmet or a permanent change to the baseball "MS" in white on the side of the maroon helmet.

I has a dream. And that dream is that one day, many years from now, our football program will win 10 or more games per year regularly and my grandson will not realize that at one time we had different uniforms or helmets than we have had his entire lifetime. In other words, let's find something and stick with it and make it a recognizable tradition in college football so that when Dan Mullen wins his NC game ESPN may recognize us as Mississippi State, not Mississippi.

That said, my favorite helmet was the one with theNikeMSU logo used during the Jackie years. Never liked the interlocking MSU during the Rockey years.

And that is MAROON helmets with MAROON jerseys- not crimson.

I agree with you on liking Jackie's NIKE uniforms the best. I also like the ones that we have now pretty well. If I had to change anything about our current uniforms, it would be putting an interlocking MSU on the helmets instead of the M-State logo. Although the current M-State logo is a vast upgrade over the old one.

My favorite uniform is the NIKE uniform with maroon helmets, maroon jerseys and white pants with black shoes and then for the road maroon helmets, white jersey and white pants and black shoes.

is for homecoming. I think it would be a cool tradition to wear throwback unforms on homecoming with the white helmet with the flying-M logo.

The only other time we should wear white helmets is in the event of a snowstorm.

Other than that- no to white. And no to silver.

1. A throwback to the Flying M helmet uniform.

2. A bowl game where we're the away team, and it's snowing.

No other exceptions.

How many times have we heard it is what the players and recruits want and like that counts? Screw you people who don't understand the hip in changing our colors!

Yes, I posted this just for you DS.

...but my dream would be to use the Baseball logo across the board in the athletic dept. and stick with it until the end of time. The past decade notwithstanding, baseball is historically our most successful venture in college athletics by far. Let's go with that.

NO, you aren't on an island. White helmets look great when coupled with the proper uni selection. I personally prefer all maroon or all white. I like helmet matching the pants no matter what color jersey being worn. Other teams wear helmets of 2 and 3 various colors. Who gives a ****? I havent really seen any color combos that have looked horrible in the past year and a half.

in Vail that year where the Kang knew months in advance it'd snow and prepared accordingly, white helmets will always bring back a lot of bad memories. Same for Russell apparel and the previous-gen M-State logo. Not to mention that they make you look like a high school. All we'd need is some random jerseys with different fonts than the rest and others missing the last names on the back...the transformation would be complete.

Unless you're Penn State, Texas, Miami, Nebraska, or some other traditional national power I'm probably leaving out, go with your dominant school color on helmets.

...Silver helmet with maroon facemask and possibly with a maroon stripe down middle would even make the SWAC blush.

This is a level of hideousness that would make even Oregon puke.

I'm calling ********. (If, indeed, Miss. State is ignorant enough to force their players to wear silver helmets with maroon facemask and possibly with a maroon stripe down middle, then I'll offer the obligatory backtrack).

more than anything, and then the logo on the helmet didn't look like a football logo. It looked like something that Vandy, Duke, or Rice or any of the "we don't really care about sports because we're an academic school and we're going to make more money than you one day" football teams. That's not what we want.

Our last uniforms would have looked better with better quality and a better logo, and the right shade of maroon.

I'm not so sure that a recruit has chosen to not go to MSU because of the uniform, but at the same time, I think it's an extra added bonus that doesn't hurt.

We should have the jerseys we had in 1941, ie, all-maroon jerseys similar to what we have today, but with the old stripes like we had back then.

That would get national exposure which would be cool. I like someone's idea on here of doing the old time flying M-State and uniforms for homecoming. I agree, that would be cool.

Whether we like it or not, I think we all have to accept that now uniforms have become more of a recruiting tool than a way to identify a school/team and signify tradition. There's nothing to like about Oregon's uniforms, but I'm sure 17-18 year olds think they're really cool, and soon they won't be the only team wearing 6-10 different unis during the season. It's gonna trickle down to everybody at some point.</p>

am i on an island by myself when I say that I like the white helmets

NO, I liked Croom's helmets.

The best helmet we ever had was the maroon, white facemask, and MSU diagonal logo from 79ish to 85. But I thought the white helmets under Croom looked good. The maroon stripe, big MState logo......looked decent. Nebraska, Tennessee, and etc., etc. have similar helmets. The ONLY REASONS it is not liked on this message board are Croom and Larry Templeton. Has nothing to do with the actual look. Croom because it was introduced during his era and LT because he is given credit for the MState logo.

Croom's all maroon uniform looked bad though. The white tube socks were terrible.

Everybody talks about the NIKE uniforms.........those were some damn cookie cutter jerseys NIKE introduced for a number of schools. I am pretty sure State, BYU, and one more which I don't recall wore the things. All had the shadowing of the number, the white and black stripe with a small logo on the sleeve........BYU did not wear them long. We were the last school to wear those mass produced jerseys.

I like our uniforms now. However, a white facemask would look better and a tweaking of the logo. But as for black jerseys, helmets, etc.........if that stuff made that big of difference with recruits.........Alabama would have Sunbelt talent.

Look, there will always be Penn State and Bama, that never change - and they don't have to.

The rest of us, for the most part, will do some tinkering - because we can, because the players like it, because the recruits like it, because some fans like it and because it is cool.

There is nothing wrong with the white helmets. The Russell uniforms were the problem. They were literally some of the worst, most bland, poor put together uniforms I have ever seen. They looked like high school uniforms. I don't want permanent white helmets, but I wouldn't mind seeing them every now and then. Tons of teams make white helmets look awesome - Texas, Auburn, Penn State, Florida's alternate helmet, Tennessee, etc. etc.

Personally, I like White helmets with white facemasks, see Texas and Tenn - I think that looks awesome.

While we are on the subject of White, our maroon helmet/white jersey/maroon pants combo that we wore at Houston is our best looking set. That combo just looks awesome - maybe one of my favorites of all time. The white jerseys with the maroon numbers and piping are awesome.

Re: Silver alternate helmets - I say go for it. I would rather see silver/gray pants or jerseys and keep the maroon helmet as an alternate set, but I think this would work as well. I still think the silver/gray unis worn by Boise against V-Tech were awesome just from a color standpoint. I obviously don't want oversized logos or paw prints all over the place, but I would like to see that color incorporated into an alternate uniform, it already is used as a highlight on our current uniforms and helmet.

I"ve never understood why someone who doesn't care about uniforms posts in a uniform thread.

People are interested b/c its just the nature of sports. Generally, people are particular about the fan gear they choose for themselves and are also interested in what their team is wearing. Its just being interested in all facets of the university. Its no different than caring what the stadium expansion will look like or whether the campus landscaping looks good.

The baseball logo is our most recognizable brand, and I'd assume there wouldn't be any "rights" issues to using it in other places. Talk about a cheap upgrade--we'd only have to buy some alternate decals.

That's my only complaint about the current helmets--it's still a version of the M-State logo.

The maroon facemask on the maroon helmet looks cool, too. I was never a big fan of the white facemask on the maroon helmets.

Personally, I can't stand white helmets, probably for the reason others have pointed out, that we lost a lot of games wearing white helmets. Silver helmets wouldn't be much better than white.

And the old style M-State logo of the Croom error reads from a distance on TV like the checkerboard Purina logo. I hope we never use those again, even as a novelty.
