Dioubate and Quaintance (if/when healthy) are our frontcourt starters. BG and JQ will get minutes at both spots. MM is a backup center, with some face up potential, but maybe not the mobility required to be a PF.

I'd rather have Garrison than Alvaro. You guys were too hyped for AF. Look at who he's visiting.

With the loss of Lewis, I think we should add a shooter. Hopefully someone who can at least handle some PG duties.

High volume shooter with poor numbers.
He was their entire offense, so he was forced to take a lot of bad shots. If he's allowed to play within a system where he isn't the first, second, and third options I think he's going to surprise some people.

3 years ago people would have killed to retain a sophomore McDonalds All American. And now its the end of the world because he is staying. This place is so dumb sometimes.

If Pope thinks BG can help us win a title, I'm all for it. We are going to be loaded this coming season.

Garrison has all the tools just needs a little refinement. His shot looks good. Just needs to be putting up a lot of shots to improve his percentages, rebound, and cut down on the turnovers. This can be accomplished if he puts in the work. I think his ceiling is high

I don't really understand the Garrison distain.

He's not AD, but he's mobile, runs the floor, hits an occasional 3, blocks shots and rebounds at a decent pace per minute -- roughly ten rebounds for 40 minutes played. Most importantly, he seems to have a lot of upside if he commits himself to improving. Will he? I don't know. But if Kentucky pulled a center from the portal to add frontcourt depth with his size, athleticism and statistics, and we all watched the below highlights video of him against SEC competition, we'd be projecting him as a big contributor who could fairly easily address the flaws in his game.

I wish he could score though.
He is going to get 8-12 PPG just on hustle plays and put backs. He has a very long windup on his jump shot but it’s a great dependable shooting motion so he can hit open perimeter shots when needed. But yes there is a reason we are trying to sign one more guard with serious scoring pop. We are going to need the back court to absorb more scoring burden since the front court starters are both defensive monsters. It’s great team building IF we get that final piece.

Who on last year’s team did you think was a big time scorer coming in? Robinson? Who else? The system scores for Pope.

I agree. I’m still not used to having a coach who aims to develop guys over multiple seasons.
I don’t see that as what we have. I see it’s a few returners but pope has to coach on the now. Any of these guys could transfer out. Maybe some are desperate to go to the G league whatever. Im happy we have 2 real contributors back but we had more return in 2011 for the 2012 run. Heck lewis is already gone. It’s nice to have some in state guys who are highly touted. Maybe they will stick a couple years nil will be nice but still don’t hold your breath. Is it May yet? Lol

It was a quick turnaround that he was leaving and now returning. Promises on starting and more money maybe?

Makes sense. We have a complete frontcourt. We need a good scoring guard and I think that’s all she wrote
Really believe that Garrison will play the stretch 4. With all of the talk Coach Pope put out toward the end of the year about Brandon putting up 6 3's/game next season should have told everyone that he had confidence in his ability to slide over there.

After what happened with Acaden, I'm sure Coach Pope wanted to retain one of his returning players, especially considering how much potential he has to get better. Hope it pays off for Brandon, Coach Pope AND our team!!!

Guess we will see next season if going all in on Brandon was worth it.
I saw enough this season to know he’s a role player off the bench.

Lots of guys have the tools but lack the IQ to use them. That’s the hardest thing to overcome if possible.
When you have to talk yourself into believing BG is really good it might be a problem.

I would still like to grab a glue guy that can rebound, defend and shoot like Almonor.

I sure hope Pope wasn’t stupid enough to pass on these guys to pacify Garrison. Maybe after losing Lewis he was shell shocked.

More shooting because we can create the lanes to get shots. When teams are having to defend Jaland Lowe they will either have to give up layups or threes. You mark my words —- we are going to be a better shooting team, slightly lower percentage but way more attempts
Maybe more in volume, but a much lower % of them going in. 😔
We may be below 35%.

I hope you end up being right. I’m not panicking about it, but I do have some concerns that rolling with Dioubate and Garrison at the 4 is going to have a negative effect on those driving lanes. If we’re as good at driving as we’re hoping, I don’t think defenses are going to worry too much about staying attached to guys who might hit 1-2 threes on a good day. Carr wasn’t perfect, but he was a much more consistent outside shooter than either of them.
I mean Dioubate shot 46% from 3 last year if he’s even close to that and shoots a few more per game. Kam was over 40% as well, we didn’t add one dimensional guys

Another wing finishes the roster, most likely, though I would like for Pope to get to 13 scholarships, it might be hard to do, though. You start adding pieces and more people see their PT dwindle and might back out like Lewis. 12 might be the optimal number with Perry and Noah being 11 and 12 and not expecting a boat load of PT. Gives you 10 guys. Two per position basically.

PG Lowe/Johnson
SG Portal/Chandler
SF Oweh/Williams
PF Garrison/Dioubate
C Quaintance/Moreno

Perry fills in at guard. Noah fills in at forward.

Thanks for the vid Md. I had missed a couple of those highlight plays....the Ohio St 2nd half steal and behind the back pass from Butler to Garrison.

I would love to have Garrison and Avaro, but Garrison and JQ is pretty nice too. I'll be very happy with Garrison if he improves his blocking out (defensive rebounding). It will be great to have a returning big man.

Making up stuff doesn’t make it true.
Data says BG does not block shots or rebound at a decent rate, he’s actually quite bad at those things. He averaged 1 block every 30min, and only 6.7 rebounds. That is the rebound rate of a SF, not a C or PF.

I don’t think so, Jonathan. Even so 35 isn’t bad if you’re getting a good volume. We are set to be a dominant offensive rebounding team with our personnel. I don’t think we will be much lower than last year on percentages.

Projections from me:

Lowe: 33% (Shot 35% as FR, Shot 27% as SO)
Johnson: 38% (Shot 37% from 3 at Link and 89% FT)
Oweh: 36% (Shot 38% as SO, Shot 36% as JR)
Dioubate: 34% (Shot 46% as SO on low volume)
Quaintance: 31% (Shot 19% on low volume as FR)
Williams: 40% (Shot 41% as FR)
Chandler: 38% (Shot 35% as FR)
Garrison: 33% (Shot 30% as SO)
Moreno: 25% (Shot 25% as SR in KHSAA)
Perry: 39% (Shot 32% as FR)
Noah: 36% (Shot 33% as FR)

All very reasonable projections and that would be an excellent shooting team

Well, in Coach Pope's defense on Garrison:

He was a McDonalds All-American
Has athletic ability and room to get stronger
Can defend on the perimeter which helps with Pick-and-Roll mismatches
Has a pretty good shooting stroke
And must have the confidence of Coach Pope
Helps with continuity since he's been in the program for a year

So, I can see the reasons Coach Pope would stick with him over bringing in a kid that hasn't completed against SEC athletes and would be a defensive liability. I trust Coach Pope on this.

P.S. That's not to say IF Coach Pope were to get another BETTER transfer OR a European BIG TIME PF to come here this Summer, I would be ELATED!!

I agree somewhat. Just look at his FR year, with less shots he made 35% of his 3s.

People tend to forget he was a Sophomore playing on a team with six fifth year Seniors and a regular Senior. Third youngest player on the team. Only guys younger than him were Perry and Noah (Chandler should have been a Junior).

Serious question: Did BG have relations with some of y'all's significant others and forget to take out the trash when he left?
No kidding...

I don't think we've seen his ceiling and I love his attitude. I was also a huge fan of Demarcus Cousins. Reminds me of an old quote, "you can calm down a fool before you can resurrect a corpse". Give me a fiery, but raw big vs a skilled/docile type any day. I hope he stays.
