I carry pepper gel when out and about as a deterrence against aggressive dogs and coyotes when walking my pup.

I do not want to get into hand-to-hand combat with any humans if possible so pepper gel can also serve that purpose. Just my two cents in looking at strategies in coping with ever increasing violence.
I have an ice pick and a butterfly knife for that...

If it happens, it happens...

Punks need to understand sometimes theres consequences..

I know. But it’s still concerning being that the guy was trying to help and now faces up to 10 yrs in prison, though I don’t think he’ll get 10 yrs. Many on the left are painting this as a “vigilante” killing, and that doesn’t appear at all to be true.

As we have been saying, this sets a dangerous precedent that if you defend yourself or others from someone who legitimately threatens you and those around you, and that person dies, you risk your life and that of your family being ruined.

Not many are going to risk that to help others.
Well, he'll get the best lawyers with all the money donated his way, so hopefully he wont even see the inside of a prison...

You have to neutralize possible danger where you see it. This past weekend we had a guy in our church service wearing a big jacket with a satchel or backpack partly hidden beneath it, wearing a hat pulled down low over his forehead and dark blockout sunglasses. He had his phone out, he was talking to himself, and it looked like he was filming the crowd and the priest, deacon, and altar servers. He might have been flashing porn pics at our priest. Our priest was rattled. I went over and sat right next to the guy, crowding him a bit, limiting his options to move. If he were to reach under his jacket, I would have hurt him, but he stopped his nonsense and the Mass ended without incident. I doubt he was anything more than a pest, maybe mentally ill, but the point is, how do you know nowadays? The police are as they say, “ minutes away, when danger is seconds away.” If you want a soft target, a church service is right up there. What if he reached under his jacket, I smash him in the head, and he was just getting a kleenex? I was actually thinking about thatv ex Marine subway case.

Lots of possibilities.

Next time go to the person and say "Hi, welcome to our church" and introduce yourself. Ask if there's anything you can do for him, genuinely, however.

We've had similar situations at our church. Not to the point of what you described but some shady looking dudes have come through and I know some in the congregation have your thought also because we've spoken about it. I am not one of them and I know a few like me as well.

The church is meant to be welcoming. Yes, one needs to be aware, but negative thoughts should not be the first thing that comes to mind. I've spoken to several of these guys over the years and all they were looking for was inclusion because they've been excluded from other places. Some just wanted food. Some just wanted to listen to a sermon. Some used to go to church when young but fell out. Some just wanted shelter for a couple hours.

Lots of possibilities but I know not to preach one way and act another.

Someone had already done that.
