Am I the only one that's uncomfortable with this?

I'll focus at length in tomorrow's Clarion-Ledger about the play-calling process. Mullen gave a generous description of the process, and here are the nuts and bolts: The staff will script the first 10 or 15 plays of the game, but not necessarily call them in that order. Then, they'll get together via the headset and say what they like and don't like. (And by 'they', I mean Mullen, OC Les Koenning, running game coordinator John Hevesy and passing game coordinator Mark Hudspeth.) Then, he talked of an eight-play menu that comes out of that meeting. "Who calls what order we run those eight in? A lot will be Les and a lot will be me, just making the suggestions between the two of us of what order or when we're going to call each one of those eight plays," Mullen said.

It just seems like too many chefs in the kitchen.

Not as uncomfortable as when Chef and Cleveland Brown, I mean Croom and McCorvey, called them.

Seriously, Mullen, Koenning and Hudspesth have all called plays in a game before. I like the fact that they will be putting their heads together. One coach can't see everything, especially from the sideline.

however "via the headset" implies that they will be doing that several times during the game. That would make me uncomfortable. </p>

A bunch of stuff I read about Urban Meyer's offense talked about constraint plays. Many, if not most, plays they run are constraint plays - plays designed to setup something else. Maybe the co-coordinators & Mullen are watching for different things on the field so they'll know what kind of constraint plays and "follow-up" (for lack of a better word) plays to call.

This isn't Mullen's first rodeo. I'm sure he'll do fine.

I work on time sensitive stuff at work and we like to have a conference call going where we can discuss what is going on, what everyone is seeing, and get opinions. In the end I make the call but I enjoy the banter and getting input from all sides. As long as there is someone clearly in control and responsible for calling the plays, even if that person isn't Mullen but he reserves the right to overrule on occasion, I don't think it's a problem. My boss stays out of things for the most part but every now and then he will interject himself and it doesn't bother me. I just want things to go well. In the same vein these guys just want to win and if that is really the only goal then they should be able to make this work without a problem.

Isn't that kinda part of this whole wacky theory of identifying mismatches and exploiting them? Obviously some coaches are going to see stuff others won't.

....I wonder if they had "Punt" written on every fourth line?
